Job Overview:
The Principal Environmental and Social Specialist will play a crucial role in supporting the EBRD's commitments under its Environmental and Social Policy. This position involves working closely with Associate Directors, Heads of Sector, and Directors within the Environment and Sustainability Division to ensure effective environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of the Bank's diverse portfolio of projects. The Principal will provide specialist input on a range of projects, particularly those that are complex and high-risk, and will be responsible for overseeing the Bank's approaches to environmental and social assessments, monitoring, reporting, and verification. The role requires collaboration with international teams and may involve travel to various countries where EBRD operates. The Principal will also contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes and procedures, ensuring that the Bank's environmental and social commitments are met efficiently and effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal will be responsible for providing specialist input to projects and Technical Cooperation initiatives, managing delivery of specific sub-projects or tasks. Key responsibilities include assessing compliance with Environmental and Social Policy, evaluating environmental and social risks and impacts, and contributing to climate and nature risk assessments. The Principal will coordinate project and consultant teams, conduct analytical and technical reviews, develop methodologies, and manage data. They will also prepare internal and external reports, represent ESD at various forums, and support capacity-building initiatives. The role requires strong project management skills, the ability to mentor and coach staff, and a commitment to continuous improvement in processes and procedures.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field, or have comparable professional experience. A proven track record in appraising complex environmental and social risks and impacts is essential, along with knowledge of international environmental and social standards and guidelines. Familiarity with financing instruments and policies, as well as strong analytical and quantitative skills, are also required. Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and effective time management are crucial for success in this role.

Educational Background:
A relevant degree in environmental and/or social sciences, economics, engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates with comparable professional experience may also be considered. The position demands a strong understanding of environmental and social issues, as well as the ability to apply this knowledge to the assessment of investment projects.

Experience:
Candidates should have substantial experience in project management, particularly in leading or contributing to multi-disciplinary teams. Experience in appraising complex environmental and social risks and impacts is essential, as is a track record of effective communication with a wide range of stakeholders. The ability to mentor and coach less experienced staff is also important, as is a proactive approach to problem-solving and negotiation.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Familiarity with a language of the EBRD countries of operations is advantageous, and for resident office appointments, local language fluency will be required.
