Job Overview:
The Knowledge Management Intern position is a unique opportunity within the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSRU) of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) at the United Nations Department of Peace Operations (DPO). This internship is designed to provide practical experience in knowledge management and organizational learning within the context of UN peace operations. The intern will report to the director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Deputy Director of SSRU and will be involved in the development and management of the UN Security Sector Reform & Governance (SSR/G) Knowledge Hub (SSR-KH). The intern will play a crucial role in sourcing, organizing, and disseminating information related to SSR, thereby supporting the UN's mission to enhance security and governance in conflict-affected areas. The internship can be adapted for remote work or part-time arrangements, making it flexible for candidates.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting the development of the SSR-KH in SharePoint, ensuring that it is a comprehensive resource for SSR materials.
  • Sourcing and uploading SSR-related documents and videos from all 15 members of the UN SSR Inter-agency Task Force to the Knowledge Hub.
  • Acting as the 'call centre' for the SSR-KH, responding to inquiries from UN personnel regarding SSR/G information.
  • Promoting the use of the SSR-KH within the UN system and conducting outreach activities.
  • Monitoring the usage of the SSR-KH and evaluating its effectiveness as a knowledge management tool.
  • Assisting in knowledge management and organizational learning initiatives, including drafting lessons learned studies and practice notes related to UN peace operations in SSR.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is essential. Candidates should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams, and have the ability to draft news articles and social media posts, as well as design surveys and polls.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be pursuing or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program. The educational background should be relevant to the internship, ideally in fields related to international relations, peace studies, security studies, or knowledge management. Proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree program must be provided during the application process.

Experience:
While no professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include internships, volunteer work, or projects related to knowledge management, security sector reform, or international relations.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate within the diverse UN environment.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid and can be either full-time (35 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours per week). The initial duration is flexible, with full-time internships lasting two months and part-time internships lasting four months, extendable up to a maximum of six months based on the needs of the Division. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and applicants are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Candidates must also ensure they meet any visa requirements before accepting an internship offer.
