Job Overview: The position of Online Volunteer for English Classes at UNDP Madagascar is designed to assist personnel in improving their English language skills, which is crucial for their professional development. Given that most staff members primarily speak French, there is a significant need for effective English communication skills. The volunteer will be responsible for developing innovative lesson plans and teaching strategies that cater to the specific needs of the personnel. The objective is to enhance their proficiency in all four language competencies: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The volunteer will also conduct assessments to evaluate progress and provide certificates to those who successfully complete the course.
Duties and Responsibilities: The online volunteer will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
Developing a comprehensive lesson plan based on a pre-assessment of the personnel's English competency.
Delivering English classes that cover all four competencies: listening, speaking, writing, and reading.
Administering a test at the end of the assignment to assess participants' levels after 12 weeks of lessons.
Providing certificates to participants who meet the required criteria through successful completion of assessments, including tests and interviews.
Finding innovative methods to engage participants and enhance their learning experience.
Regularly evaluating the effectiveness of the teaching materials and strategies used during the classes.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for this position should possess strong English language skills, with a focus on teaching methodologies. They should have experience in language instruction or tutoring, particularly in English as a second language. Additionally, the ability to create engaging and effective lesson plans tailored to the needs of adult learners is essential. Familiarity with online teaching platforms and tools is also required, as the classes will be conducted virtually. Strong communication skills, patience, and a passion for teaching are crucial for success in this role.
Educational Background: A background in education, linguistics, or a related field is preferred for this position. Candidates should ideally have qualifications related to English language teaching, such as a TEFL or TESOL certification, which demonstrates their capability to teach English effectively to non-native speakers.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have prior experience in teaching or tutoring English, particularly to adults or in a professional setting. Experience in developing lesson plans and conducting assessments is highly desirable. Familiarity with the challenges faced by non-native English speakers, especially in a workplace context, will be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as the classes will be conducted in English. Proficiency in French is also advantageous, given that the majority of the personnel speak French. This bilingual capability will facilitate better communication and understanding between the volunteer and the participants.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position, and while it may not offer financial compensation, it provides valuable experience in teaching and working with an international organization. The role is expected to be part-time, with flexible hours to accommodate the schedules of the personnel involved. The volunteer will be working remotely, allowing for a broader reach and the ability to connect with participants from various locations within Madagascar.
