Job Overview: The Communication and Advocacy Specialist position is designed to support UNICEF's communication, advocacy, and social behavior change (SBC) strategies in Brazil, particularly within the Belem Zone Office. The role involves collaborating with the national communication team and local media to enhance visibility for UNICEF's initiatives and foster behavioral changes that advance children's rights. The specialist will be responsible for developing and executing local communication strategies, supporting advocacy efforts, and strengthening relationships with local media. This position requires a proactive approach to engage with communities and stakeholders, ensuring that communication efforts align with UNICEF's strategic objectives and effectively address the needs of vulnerable children and adolescents in the region.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Communication and Advocacy Specialist include: 1) Supporting the implementation of national communication strategies and advocacy efforts in the Belem Zone Office; 2) Coordinating the development of advocacy materials, such as presentations and factsheets, for UNICEF stakeholders; 3) Assisting in the design and execution of communication plans for various projects; 4) Training implementing partners in communication material production; 5) Monitoring and evaluating the dissemination and effectiveness of advocacy materials; 6) Developing and maintaining relationships with local media; 7) Drafting and editing articles, press releases, and other communication materials; 8) Supporting the design and implementation of SBC strategies; 9) Conducting research and analysis to inform communication strategies; 10) Collaborating with various teams to ensure alignment and cohesion in communication efforts; 11) Managing brand consistency and protecting UNICEF's image; 12) Supporting event planning and logistics for communication activities; 13) Maintaining a library of media coverage and monitoring UNICEF's presence in the media.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a strong background in communication, advocacy, and social behavior change, with a focus on children's rights. Candidates should possess excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and a high degree of autonomy. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to prepare clear reports and conduct presentations. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to UNICEF's values and principles, including integrity, accountability, and respect for diversity. Familiarity with the Brazilian context, particularly regarding issues affecting children and adolescents, is essential for effective engagement in this role.
Languages: Fluency in Portuguese is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication in Brazil. Proficiency in English is also required, as it is essential for collaboration with international teams and stakeholders. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly Spanish, would be considered an asset and could enhance communication efforts with diverse communities.
Additional Notes: This position is a national UN Volunteer assignment, which means the volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The role is based in Belém, Brazil, which has a moderate security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security level (3) according to the United Nations Department of Safety and Security. Volunteers are advised to exercise caution due to the potential for serious crime in urban areas.
