Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The Arab Centre for Climate Change Policies at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is dedicated to addressing climate change issues in the Arab region. Established to promote sustainable development, ESCWA works with various stakeholders to enhance regional cooperation and policy-making. The organization focuses on climate change impacts, particularly on water resources and socio-economic vulnerabilities, and collaborates with international partners, including the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) and the Government of Sweden, to implement its initiatives.

Job Overview:
The consultant will play a crucial role in finalizing 22 country fact sheets that provide comprehensive geospatial mapping and analysis of climate change impacts on Arab States. This position involves working with datasets to produce zonal statistics and maps that will be used for technical materials in both English and Arabic. The consultant will be expected to conduct detailed analyses and contribute to the overall objectives of the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR). The work is expected to be completed within a two-month timeframe, with a focus on delivering high-quality outputs that inform policy and decision-making regarding climate action in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
  • Verifying administrative boundaries for 22 Arab states to ensure accurate geospatial datasets.
  • Conducting zonal analysis to extract and tabulate statistical information from provided climate raster datasets, focusing on minimum, maximum, and mean values across three time periods and two scenarios.
  • Finalizing maps for technical materials that will be issued in both English and Arabic, ensuring clarity and accuracy in representation.
  • Providing ad hoc support, which may include creating maps and analyses for PowerPoint presentations and other technical documents. The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Sustainable Development Officer and the overall supervision of the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster Lead.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a master's degree in geography, climate change, engineering, or environmental science. A Ph.D. is considered desirable. All applicants are required to submit a copy of their educational degree, as incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Additionally, candidates must have a minimum of five years of experience in geospatial research and analysis, with a strong emphasis on previous professional experience working with geospatial datasets related to climate change. Experience in the Arab region is also desirable, as it will enhance the consultant's understanding of the local context and challenges.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a master's degree in a relevant field such as geography, climate change, engineering, or environmental science. A Ph.D. is preferred, indicating a higher level of expertise and research capability. Candidates must provide proof of their educational qualifications as part of the application process.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience in geospatial research and analysis. This experience should include working with climate change-related datasets and conducting analyses that inform policy and decision-making. Previous experience in the Arab region is advantageous, as it provides context and understanding of the specific challenges faced by these countries regarding climate change.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is mandatory for this position, as these are the primary working languages of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in all four language skills: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat, but not required.
