Job Overview: The Assistant DSO will join the Safety Office team within the Physics department (EP-DI) at CERN, focusing on ensuring compliance with safety measures and best practices. This role involves supporting the Safety Office in conducting risk assessments for various EP activities and installations, performing safety inspections, and coordinating technical inspections with domain experts. The Assistant DSO will also assist in creating and maintaining safety documentation, generating incident analysis reports, and participating in safety-related meetings. The position may evolve into a Specialised Safety Officer role, depending on the candidate's specific knowledge in safety domains such as fire, chemical, or cryogenic safety.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct risk assessments for EP activities and installations, ensuring compliance with CERN Safety Rules.
Perform safety inspections and coordinate technical inspections with experts.
Assist activity supervisors in creating and updating safety documentation, including operation and maintenance procedures.
Create incident analysis reports and follow up on action plans for resolution.
Participate in periodic safety meetings and collaborate with other Safety Officers and stakeholders.
Potentially take on the role of Specialised Safety Officer based on specific safety domain knowledge.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and possess a professional background in Engineering or Physics (or a related field). A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation experience is required. Candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Educational Background: A Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field is required, with a preference for candidates who have completed their studies within the last 2 to 6 years. A PhD in a relevant field is also acceptable, provided the candidate has no more than 3 years of post-graduation experience.
Experience: Candidates should have experience in performing risk assessments, incident analysis, and safety inspections. Specific knowledge in safety domains such as fire, chemical, cryogenic, or radiation protection is advantageous. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and possess excellent interpersonal communication skills is essential.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being highly desirable. Proficiency in both languages would be considered an asset.

The role involves working in radiation areas and underground installations, necessitating a valid driving license and medical clearance due to occupational health risks. The compensation includes a monthly stipend between 6287 and 6911 Swiss Francs (net of tax), comprehensive health coverage, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year and have access to on-the-job training and language courses.
