Job Description
Job Posting Organization: VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting volunteering as a powerful and practical means to combat poverty and inequality. Established with the mission to create lasting change through volunteering, VSO operates in some of the world’s most impoverished and fragile regions. The organization believes in empowering local communities by working alongside volunteers and partners rather than merely providing aid. VSO's approach, known as Volunteering for Development (VfD), prioritizes the most marginalized individuals, fostering active citizenship and community-led change that aligns with sustainable development goals. VSO has a global presence, engaging volunteers from various countries to contribute to development initiatives.
Job Overview: The role involves accompanying a cluster of three Civil Society Groups (CSGs) or Networks, including the Youth Engagement Disability Networks, Youth Engagement Network, and Pujehun Women’s group, located in Freetown and Pujehun. The primary objective is to strengthen these groups' capacities to become resilient, self-sustaining, and well-equipped to advocate for their development priorities. This includes ensuring equitable access to quality public services across various sectors such as Economic Growth, Health, Climate Resilience, Humanitarian efforts, and Youth issues. The volunteer will collaborate with CSGs, the VSO team, and partners to promote knowledge sharing and facilitate locally led development and systemic change. This role is crucial for building trust and co-facilitating comprehensive capacity strengthening using a volunteer relational model and a co-creating approach.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborate with Civil Society Groups (CSGs) to assess their needs and development priorities.
Facilitate capacity-building workshops and training sessions to enhance the skills and knowledge of CSG members.
Foster partnerships between CSGs and local authorities to ensure accountability and equitable access to public services.
Encourage knowledge sharing among CSGs and promote best practices in community engagement.
Monitor and evaluate the progress of CSGs in achieving their development goals.
Act as a liaison between CSGs and VSO to ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
Document and report on the activities and outcomes of the volunteer's engagement with CSGs.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in diverse teams. Experience in community development, capacity building, or related fields is essential. A background in social work, public health, or a related discipline is preferred. Candidates should also exhibit resilience and adaptability in challenging environments, with a commitment to promoting equality and inclusivity.
Educational Background: A degree in social sciences, international development, public health, or a related field is required. Additional certifications in community development or project management would be advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of relevant experience in community engagement, capacity building, or development work. Experience working with marginalized communities or in low-resource settings is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Sierra Leone would be an asset, as it would facilitate better communication with community members.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is until March 31, 2026, with the possibility of renewal based on funding confirmation. The role is full-time, and volunteers will receive an allowance in local currency to cover reasonable living expenses, although it may not be sufficient to send money home. Accommodation will be basic, reflecting the conditions of the communities served. VSO promotes equal opportunities and values a diverse workforce, ensuring a fair recruitment process.
