Job Overview: The Research Consultant position at IOM Kenya is a critical role aimed at supporting a targeted research initiative focused on understanding the complexities of irregular migration and human trafficking in the KSE borderlands. The consultant will be responsible for conducting in-depth research that generates localized and policy-relevant evidence to inform IOM programming and government responses. This role requires collaboration with a dedicated team and involves analyzing qualitative data, conducting literature reviews, and producing comprehensive reports that will contribute to the broader efforts of promoting safe and orderly migration. The consultant will also engage with various stakeholders to ensure the research findings are effectively integrated into policy recommendations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
Conducting ongoing literature reviews and contributing to the development of meta-analysis matrices related to counter-smuggling and migration dynamics in the East and Horn of Africa.
Analyzing qualitative data collected by IOM, including social network analysis and assessments of migrant vulnerability.
Leading weekly qualitative analysis meetings with IOM researchers to discuss updates and align on coding and themes.
Delivering high-quality outputs, including coded qualitative transcripts, codebooks, and written narratives of findings and recommendations.
Responding to stakeholder feedback and integrating inputs into the final report.
Ensuring timely delivery of all assignments and maintaining high standards of research quality throughout the project.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s or above) in relevant fields such as Research Methods, Public Health, Migration Studies, Political Science, or Sociology. Additionally, they should have strong qualitative research skills, excellent English writing and analytical abilities, and proven experience in producing policy-oriented research. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders are also essential for this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master’s or higher) in fields related to research methods, public health, migration studies, political science, sociology, or international development. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of migration and trafficking dynamics and for conducting high-quality research.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least 8 to 10 years of research experience specifically in the East and Horn of Africa, with a proven track record in researching human trafficking, smuggling, migration, or border governance. Familiarity with UK migration priorities and programming is considered a strong advantage. The candidate should also have experience working independently in high-risk or hard-to-reach environments, demonstrating the ability to manage complex research projects effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. This proficiency is essential for conducting research, writing reports, and engaging with stakeholders effectively. While English is the primary language required, knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
Additional Notes: The consultancy position is subject to funding confirmation and will require the selected candidate to be medically fit for appointment. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under its Compensation Plan, but consultants must secure their own medical insurance for non-occupational issues. The organization maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
