Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The internship is offered by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), which is dedicated to promoting disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control. The UNODA Vienna Office facilitates cooperation and effective interaction with regional partners in these areas. The office serves as a global hub for disarmament and non-proliferation education, providing educational opportunities and materials for a diverse audience, including academia, students, young professionals, and civil society. The office is involved in various intergovernmental processes and ensures timely analysis and reporting on developments related to its mandated areas of work. Job Overview:
The internship position is designed to support the UNODA Vienna Office in its liaison, outreach, and educational efforts related to disarmament and non-proliferation. Interns will work under the direct supervision of professional staff and will be involved in various substantive tasks that contribute to the office's mission. The internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week over a duration of six months, starting in January 202
  • Interns will gain valuable experience in international relations, particularly in the fields of disarmament and non-proliferation, while also enhancing their skills in communication, research, and project management.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will undertake a variety of duties, including but not limited to: supporting the substantive work of the Office and its cooperation with Vienna-based organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO); participating in meetings, conferences, and seminars, and preparing meeting reports; assisting in the planning and execution of outreach efforts and projects; developing communication products for the Office, including managing social media accounts and preparing analytical reports; contributing to the development and review of educational materials for diverse audiences; preparing background documents, presentations, summaries, and speeches; conducting analyses of open-source information related to disarmament and non-proliferation; and performing other tasks as necessary to support the Office's mission.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Educational Background:
The position requires candidates to have either completed or be in the process of completing a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree. This educational background is essential to ensure that interns possess the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the Office's work in disarmament and non-proliferation.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should ideally have some familiarity with international relations, disarmament, or related fields. This could include academic coursework, volunteer work, or internships that demonstrate an understanding of the UN's mission and operations.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for both oral and written communication, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, such as French, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
