In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment:

The consultant will be responsible for synthesizing a wealth of information gathered from various sources, including documentation reviews and interviews with key informants. This role requires a deep understanding of women's leadership initiatives, particularly in the African context, and the ability to articulate the impact of AWLN's work in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. The consultant will work closely with the AWLN Secretariat and other stakeholders to ensure that the report not only serves as a tool for internal learning but also enhances external visibility and strategic advocacy for women's leadership in Africa. The consultant will be expected to deliver a high-quality report that adheres to AWLN's branding and communication guidelines, showcasing the network's achievements and future vision.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Consultant will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: developing an inception report that outlines the approach, methodology, timeline, and proposed structure of the comprehensive AWLN report; conducting a thorough desk review of relevant AWLN documents and background materials from 2017 to 2025; mapping key AWLN initiatives and programs across the six pillars of work; liaising with AWLN Secretariat colleagues, National Chapters, and partners to gather and consolidate information; drafting the report to highlight strategic partnerships and success stories; identifying and developing 8-10 human impact stories that showcase the effectiveness of AWLN's initiatives; facilitating validation discussions with stakeholders to refine the report; integrating feedback from UN Women and AWLN Secretariat colleagues; ensuring clarity and accessibility of the report for a broad audience; and delivering a final high-quality report ready for publication and dissemination.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a master's degree in international development, Women and Gender Studies, international relations, public policy, or a relevant field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the master's degree. The role requires a strong foundation in gender studies and international relations, with a focus on women's empowerment and leadership.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a master's degree in a relevant field such as international development, Women and Gender Studies, international relations, or public policy. A first-level university degree may be considered if accompanied by sufficient professional experience, demonstrating the candidate's capability to fulfill the role's requirements effectively.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least 7 years of professional work experience at the national or international level in fields related to international relations, women and gender studies, or similar areas. Experience working in Africa is particularly desirable, as it will provide valuable context for understanding the challenges and opportunities faced by women leaders on the continent. Previous experience in drafting high-quality analytical reports that draw on diverse data sources is essential for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory for this position, as these languages are critical for effective communication within the context of UN Women and its partners. Additionally, fluency in another language such as Arabic or Portuguese is considered desirable, as it may enhance the consultant's ability to engage with a broader range of stakeholders across different regions.
