Job Overview:
The Generator Operator/Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the continuous operation of generators that power DRC activities. This position involves not only the operation and monitoring of generators but also their maintenance to ensure they function efficiently and safely. The technician will be responsible for troubleshooting and repairing minor issues, maintaining accurate records of generator usage and maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The role requires a proactive approach to managing fuel supplies and spare parts, as well as maintaining a clean and safe working environment around the generator area. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain generators safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct pre-use and post-use inspections of generators, reporting any faults or damages to the supervisor.
  • Troubleshoot and repair minor generator problems, both electrical and mechanical.
  • Ensure the generator at the Hagadera Digital Centre is in good working condition at all times.
  • Request fuel and spare parts timely through the Supply Chain Officer or UNHCR.
  • Maintain adequate fuel levels and service materials.
  • Record daily generator usage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities in the generator logbook.
  • Adhere to the generator operating schedule for switching on and off.
  • Ensure all safety measures are in place, including working fire extinguishers and stocked first aid kits. 1
  • Maintain cleanliness around the generator area and store tools properly. 1
  • Assist with simple electrical wiring, connections, and installations when required. 1
  • Support other team members and carry out any other duties assigned by the Logistics Officer or Supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
  • At least 1–2 years of experience working with generators or electrical/mechanical systems.
  • Good understanding of generator operation, maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical wiring and installations.
  • Basic mechanical repair and maintenance skills.
  • Ability to identify and solve minor faults quickly.
  • Good record-keeping and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work responsibly and follow safety procedures.
  • Honest, reliable, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • A recommendation letter from an NGO or UN agency will be an added advantage.

Educational Background:
A Certificate or Diploma in Electrical Installation, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from a recognized Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution is required. Candidates should also possess knowledge of safety standards and maintenance procedures relevant to generator operation and maintenance.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 1–2 years of relevant experience working with generators or in electrical/mechanical systems. This experience should include practical knowledge of generator operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance, as well as familiarity with safety protocols in a technical environment.

Languages:
While the job does not specify mandatory languages, proficiency in English is likely essential for communication within the organization and with external stakeholders. Knowledge of local languages may be advantageous for interacting with community members and local authorities.

Additional Notes:
The position is offered on a 4-month contract with the possibility of extension, contingent upon funding and performance.
