Job Overview:
The consultant will be tasked with creating an impactful and user-friendly web interface for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. This role involves improving the digital presence of the initiative, which is measured through various Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as monthly page views, bounce rates, and user journeys. The consultant will work closely with the UNEP Communication web team to identify user needs and develop new user stories, as well as program new functionalities based on these needs. The position requires supporting a vast network of partners by onboarding new partners and restoration initiatives to the digital interface, connecting online users to essential resources, and tracking the impact of restoration efforts on the ground. The consultant will also be responsible for drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and guidance documents, editing content on UNEP's website, and supporting Search Engine Optimization and paid advertisements for UNEP communication products.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will have a variety of responsibilities, including:
  • Improving the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration’s digital presence, measured by KPIs like monthly page views and user journeys.
  • Collaborating with the UNEP Communication web team to identify user needs and develop new user stories.
  • Programming new functionalities based on user needs.
  • Onboarding new partners and restoration initiatives to the digital interface.
  • Connecting online users to necessary resources, knowledge, and tools for restoration efforts.
  • Tracking the impact of restoration efforts through KPIs such as the number of organizations involved and hectares covered.
  • Selecting content for and managing the UN Decade’s monthly newsletter, monitoring KPIs like opening rates and links clicked.
  • Coordinating monthly UN Decade Learning Sessions for partners, aiming for diverse participation.
  • Drafting SOPs and guidance documents. 1
  • Editing content on unep.org, including events. 1
  • Supporting SEO and paid advertisement efforts for UNEP communication products. 1
  • Performing any other tasks related to digital communication and outreach under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and UNEP's Communication Division.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Journalism, Information Technology, or a relevant field. A minimum of two years of experience in digital content management and user engagement is required. Knowledge of Content Management Systems such as Drupal or WordPress is essential. The ability to learn on-the-job and a willingness to familiarize oneself with relevant digital tools is desirable.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field such as Communication, Journalism, or Information Technology. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of digital content management and user engagement, which are central to the role.

Experience:
The consultant should have at least two years of experience in digital content management and user engagement. This experience is vital for effectively improving the digital presence of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and for successfully managing the various responsibilities outlined in the job description.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, is desirable and would be considered an asset in this role.
