Job Overview:
The Translator position within the Languages, Publications and Conference Management (LPC) section of ICAO is crucial for ensuring effective communication across multiple languages, particularly focusing on the translation from English to Chinese. The incumbent will be responsible for producing high-quality translations of a wide range of technical, legal, and administrative documents, ensuring that the translations are not only accurate but also stylistically appropriate for the intended audience. This role requires a deep understanding of both source and target languages, as well as the ability to conduct terminological research to maintain consistency and clarity in translations. The Translator will also be expected to perform interpretation duties when necessary, contributing to the overall mission of ICAO in promoting multilingualism and effective communication within the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Translate texts covering a broad range of technical, legal, or administrative subjects dealt with by ICAO, ensuring accuracy and completeness in the target language.
  • Conduct terminological research related to texts being translated, clarifying meanings and ensuring consistency with other translators.
  • Ensure the quality of translations by proofreading and analyzing both source and target texts, communicating with originators as necessary.
  • Perform interpretation duties when required and undertake other related tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain a high degree of quality in all translation assignments, meeting deadlines and utilizing appropriate text-processing software for formatting.

Required Qualifications:
  • A first-level degree from a university or an institution of equivalent status, preferably with an emphasis on translation, languages, international or scientific studies.
  • At least five years of professional experience in translating from English to Chinese, preferably in technical or legal contexts.
  • Familiarity with computer-assisted translation tools and a strong understanding of technical or legal subjects.
  • Successful completion of the United Nations exam for translators is desirable, along with training or experience in conference interpreting.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a first-level university degree or equivalent, ideally with a focus on translation or languages. Additional qualifications such as a successful completion of the United Nations exam for translators are considered advantageous.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of professional translation experience, specifically translating from English to Chinese. Experience in translating technical or legal texts within governmental, large-scale private organizations, or international organizations is preferred. Training or experience in conference interpreting is also desirable.

Languages:
The incumbent must have a complete command of Chinese as their mother tongue or the language used for education, along with excellent knowledge of English. A good command of one of the other official languages of the Organization is considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered on a fixed-term basis for an initial period of three years, with the first year being probationary for external candidates. ICAO staff members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting their status as international civil servants and may be assigned to various activities or offices within the organization. The remuneration for this position includes a net base salary of USD $64,121 per annum, plus a post adjustment of USD $31,868 per annum, which is subject to change.
