Job Overview: The Development Coordination Officer will provide management expertise and strategic guidance to Resident Coordination Offices (RCOs) to enhance inter-agency collaboration and programming in crisis contexts. This role is crucial for supporting the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and involves rapid deployment to RCOs and UN Country Teams during significant developments. The officer will conduct political economyanalysis and economic impact assessments to understand the implications of crises on vulnerable groups and sectors. The position requires close collaboration with various stakeholders, including government officials, technical advisors, and civil society, to develop stabilization options and financing opportunities. Frequent deployments to RCOs for up to three months at a time are expected, along with short-notice travel to provide surge capacity support.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Development Coordination Officer will be responsible for planning and facilitating evidence-based political economy analysis and crisis economic impact assessments. This includes understanding inflation, exchange rates, fiscal space, and their effects on vulnerable populations. The officer will develop projections to assist in planning under uncertainty, coordinate the preparation of UN flagship reports, and analyze trends to provide advice on SDG financing mechanisms. Additionally, the officer will engage with national counterparts to advocate for fiscal and monetary measures in response to crises, foster peer exchanges among economists, and support the development of integrated SDG programming cycles. The role also involves knowledge management efforts, establishing baselines for measuring disruptions, and promoting collaboration within the UN system.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in economics or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Successful completion of programs in data analytics or business analytics is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of sustainable development policies, economic research, and crisis management, with a focus on SDG financing and development economics.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is considered an advantage.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, economic research, and analysis in crisis settings is required. Candidates should have knowledge of development economics and relevant experience at the national or international level. Experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder spaces and participatory assessment processes is desirable, along with outstanding analytical and writing skills.
Languages: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, proficiency in both languages is required, with a minimum level of II in reading, writing, listening, and speaking according to the UN Language Framework.
