European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) About
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to probe the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs a diverse workforce of physicists and engineers who work collaboratively to explore the basic constituents of matter. The organization operates in multiple countries and is known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, which has been a core value since its inception. CERN's facilities include the world's largest particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, which is used to conduct groundbreaking research in particle physics.
Job Overview: The Mechanical Technician position at CERN is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about mechanical engineering and beam instrumentation for particle accelerators. The successful candidate will join the Beam Instrumentation group (BI) and contribute to the development of next-generation beam profile monitors as part of the North Area Consolidation Programme. This role involves working in a multicultural and diverse team at the forefront of scientific research, providing a stimulating environment that fosters skill development in precision electro-mechanics assembly, testing, and installation. The position requires strong communication skills and proficiency in CATIA for 2D and 3D design and modeling in a PLM environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a Mechanical Technician, your primary responsibilities will include:
Assisting in the design and development of beam instrumentation systems, including beam profile monitors.
Engaging in the assembly and testing of mechanical components and systems.
Collaborating with team members to ensure the successful execution of projects within the North Area Consolidation Programme.
Conducting interventions in underground installations and working in radiation areas as required.
Maintaining accurate documentation of designs, assembly processes, and testing results.
Participating in on-the-job training and formal training sessions to enhance your skills and knowledge in mechanical engineering and beam instrumentation.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
Have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Hold a general secondary education diploma as the highest educational qualification.
Have never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract before. Note that applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position. Experience in mechanical design, mechanical drawings, and assembly of mechanical components is essential, and knowledge of beam instruments is advantageous.
Educational Background: The position requires candidates to have completed their secondary education, with a focus on Mechanical Engineering or a related field. A general secondary education diploma is the minimum educational qualification required for this role. Candidates with higher educational qualifications such as Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degrees are not eligible to apply, emphasizing the focus on early-career professionals in this position.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have up to two years of professional experience in mechanical engineering or a related field. This experience should include practical skills in mechanical design, assembly, and testing of mechanical components. Familiarity with beam instrumentation is considered an advantage, but not mandatory. The position is tailored for individuals who are at the beginning of their careers and looking to gain valuable experience in a prestigious research environment.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory for this position. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning the basics of the other language, which is essential for effective communication within the diverse team at CERN. This bilingual requirement reflects CERN's international environment and the need for collaboration among team members from various linguistic backgrounds.
Additional Notes: The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the target start date for the role is February 1, 202
The position involves working in radiation areas and may require interventions in underground installations, necessitating a valid driving license. The job offers a monthly stipend of 4624 Swiss Francs (net of tax), comprehensive health coverage for the employee and their family, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, employees are entitled to 30 days of paid leave per year and will have access to on-the-job training and formal training opportunities, including in-house language courses for English and/or French.
