Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's daily responsibilities will vary based on their background and may include: compiling basic information and analyzing key human rights issues; collecting and reviewing documents from UN headquarters and field offices; assisting Desk Officers in maintaining contacts with UN Country Teams, NGOs, and national human rights institutions; coordinating missions of special rapporteurs and experts; supporting activities related to the Universal Periodic Review; assisting in the preparation of technical papers and speeches; organizing meetings and seminars; and performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor. This role provides a comprehensive introduction to the workings of OHCHR and the broader human rights landscape.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). A background in international relations, international human rights law, political science, or related fields is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in human rights issues and the workings of international organizations.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes either a completed graduate program or being in the final year of a bachelor’s degree program. Relevant fields of study include international relations, international human rights law, political science, or other related disciplines. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of human rights work and the role of the United Nations in promoting and protecting these rights.
Experience: While prior work experience is not mandatory for this internship, any relevant experience in human rights, international relations, or related fields will be considered an asset.
