In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.

Job Overview:
The Social Media Specialist at UN Women plays a crucial role in coordinating and overseeing social media policies, strategies, and activities. Reporting to the Social Media Manager, the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing social media strategies that align with UN Women’s overall communications plans, particularly for significant campaigns and international observances such as International Women’s Day. This position involves managing daily social media outreach and engagement, ensuring that UN Women’s work and issues related to gender equality and women's empowerment are effectively communicated across various platforms. The Social Media Specialist will also provide technical and administrative support to colleagues, manage access to social media tools, and deliver training to staff on social media usage. The role requires a proactive approach to monitoring social media trends and conversations, as well as the ability to analyze and report on social media performance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement social media strategies for major events and campaigns, ensuring alignment with overall communications plans. Collaborate with graphic designers and multimedia teams to create social media assets.
  • Manage daily social media outreach, ensuring effective messaging and engagement on platforms such as X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Monitor and manage community engagement, aiming to increase visibility and audience interaction.
  • Provide technical and administrative support for social media account management, including training for colleagues and maintaining records related to social media activities.
  • Conduct regular analytics and reporting on social media performance, identifying opportunities for improvement and engagement.
  • Supervise consultants supporting social media outreach and ensure the effective implementation of strategies.
  • Research and recommend new tools for social media management and analytics, leading procurement processes as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as required to support the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must possess expert-level knowledge of major social media platforms and have proven experience in strategic social media outreach at the international level. They should demonstrate the ability to develop and implement large-scale social media strategies and campaigns. Excellent writing and editing skills are essential, along with experience in producing social media content. Candidates should have strong organizational and time management skills, the ability to multitask, and a collaborative spirit to work effectively with diverse teams. A strong awareness of digital trends and knowledge of women's rights and gender equality issues, along with familiarity with the UN system, is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
A Master’s degree or equivalent in Communications, Journalism, International Affairs, Political Science, or a related field is required for this position. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
Candidates must have at least 5 years of experience in social media at the international level. This includes experience in developing and implementing social media strategies and campaigns, as well as writing, editing, and content production for social media audiences. Familiarity with advanced tools for social media management and evaluation, such as HootSuite, is required. Experience in fast-paced communications or advocacy contexts is desirable, along with the ability to produce and interpret social media analytics to inform content production.

Languages:
Written and oral fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable, and familiarity with other UN languages such as Chinese, Russian, or Arabic is also considered beneficial.
