In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system, which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment: > Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) > International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW) > Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI) > United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) The main roles of UN Women are: > To support inter-governmental bodies, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, in their formulation of policies, global standards and norms. > To help Member States to implement these standards, standing ready to provide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it, and to forge effective partnerships with civil society. > To lead and coordinate the UN system’s work on gender equality as well as promote accountability, including through regular monitoring of system-wide progress.
Job Description

Job Overview:
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Executive Board Programme Analyst, providing essential support to the Executive Board Secretariat (EBS). This role involves preparing briefing notes, drafting correspondence, and assisting in the organization of meetings for the Executive Board. The intern will also be responsible for maintaining the Executive Board website, managing communications, and updating a matrix that tracks the implementation of Executive Board decisions. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in a fast-paced environment and to understand intergovernmental processes, contributing to the mission of UN Women.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's primary responsibilities include supporting the preparation of briefing notes and talking points through research, drafting correspondence for meeting coordination, and assisting in the maintenance of the Executive Board website. The intern will monitor the generic email inbox, update email distribution lists, and manage the Executive Board's social media account. Additionally, the intern will help finalize and regularly update a matrix that tracks the implementation of Executive Board decisions, liaising with various divisions within UN Women. The intern will also provide logistical and administrative support for meetings and related events organized by the EBS.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to UN Women’s mission and values, displaying cultural sensitivity and adaptability. They should produce accurate outputs with attention to detail and manage complexities and shifting priorities effectively. Strong writing and communication skills in English are essential, along with the ability to maintain constructive relationships with clients and partners. The intern should adhere to deadlines, follow up on time-sensitive issues, and maintain confidentiality with internal and external stakeholders.

Educational Background:
Applicants must have university studies in disciplines such as Social Sciences, Political Science, International Relations, or other relevant fields. Candidates should meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate program, be in the final year of a bachelor's degree, have graduated within the last two years, or be part of a postgraduate professional traineeship program that requires the internship.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should demonstrate relevant skills and competencies that align with the responsibilities of the internship. Experience in administrative support, research, or communications would be beneficial.

Languages:
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Knowledge of another UN language is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage in a multilingual environment.

Additional Notes:
The internship is unpaid, but UN Women provides a stipend to interns who do not receive financial support from other sources. Interns are required to provide proof of enrollment in a valid health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment or degree, a scanned copy of their passport or national ID, and a copy of a valid visa if applicable.
