Job Overview: The position of Senior Consultant for Global Citizenship Education involves leading the revision and update of the Global Citizenship Education: Topics and Learning Objectives publication. This role is crucial in ensuring that the guide reflects the most recent developments in global citizenship education (GCED) and incorporates lessons learned from past experiences. The consultant will analyze progress in GCED, review new scholarly work, and consider the implications of recent global events and socio-political dynamics. The consultant will work closely with the UNESCO Secretariat and a Technical Group of Experts to draft and revise the guide, ensuring it is relevant and applicable to various educational contexts. The overall objective is to enhance the robustness and applicability of the GCED framework, making it more effective for educators and learners in today's world.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Senior Consultant will undertake comprehensive background research, including a literature and programmatic review of GCED, to identify core issues and lessons that will inform the revision process. They will lead the drafting of the revised publication in collaboration with the UNESCO Secretariat and the Core Team, integrating feedback from various stakeholders through surveys and workshops. Key responsibilities include preparing surveys, facilitating discussions, drafting summaries of consultations, and producing multiple drafts of the revised guide, ensuring that all feedback is incorporated into the final version. The consultant will also be responsible for granting UNESCO full copyright rights to the publication and ensuring that all contributors are acknowledged appropriately.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a PhD in a relevant field such as International Development, Social Sciences, or Public Policy. They should have at least 10 years of proven experience in leading research and writing reports on education topics, particularly GCED. Excellent analytical and drafting skills in English are essential, demonstrated by at least three high-quality publications. Experience with similar assignments within the UN or International Organizations is required, along with a background in chairing multicultural and interdisciplinary working groups. Familiarity with multilateral organizations, especially within the UN system, is considered an asset.
Educational Background: A doctoral degree (PhD) in a specialized field relevant to the assignment is mandatory. This could include disciplines such as International Development, Social Sciences, Public Policy, or other related fields that provide a strong foundation for understanding global citizenship education and its implications.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, particularly in leading research and writing publications related to education and global citizenship education. Candidates should have a proven track record of applying qualitative and quantitative research methods and experience in facilitating technical working groups within multicultural settings. Previous work with international organizations, especially within the UN system, is highly desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position. Knowledge of French or any other UN language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to the global dialogue on education.
Additional Notes: The contract for this position is non-staff and has a duration of 8 months.
