Job Overview:
The Regional Data Analyst will be stationed in Cairo and will work under the overall supervision of the Deputy Regional Director for Operations. This position involves direct supervision from the Regional Thematic Specialist for Data and Research and secondary supervision from the Chief Strategy Officer at the Global Data Institute. The primary focus of the Regional Data Analyst is to generate and communicate analyses and insights that support decision-making processes related to migration data analysis. This role is crucial in enhancing the regional evidence base on migration and human mobility, addressing primary data gaps, and consolidating data and analysis work across the region. The analyst will engage in various tasks, including data processing, analysis, reporting, and ensuring adherence to IOM's data protection and governance standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Regional Data Analyst will be responsible for several key duties, including:
  • Identifying new opportunities for data analysis process improvements and appropriate data sources for analytics projects.
  • Ensuring accurate and reliable data centralization to support analytical work.
  • Collaborating with Data Engineers and Data Scientists to enhance data flows and quality.
  • Coordinating the development and implementation of databases and data collection systems.
  • Conducting regional and thematic analyses and reports on migration dynamics, identifying gaps in data and specific needs for policy-making.
  • Supporting the analysis and validation of migration data collected at various points along the migration journey.
  • Utilizing existing IOM data for triangulation to enhance cross-thematic data analysis.
  • Coordinating desk reviews and extensive analysis of identified data sources.
  • Analyzing trends or patterns using various statistical methods and machine learning techniques. 1
  • Ensuring timely preparation of information products and participating in working groups to provide strategic input.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Migration Studies, Demography, Political or Social Science, Statistics, Econometrics, Public Health, Sustainability Science, Data Science, or a related field from an accredited institution, along with five years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a University degree in the aforementioned fields with seven years of relevant experience is acceptable. Applicants with PhDs in related disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience in information management, reporting, and data analysis from complex information systems is essential, along with familiarity with demographic studies and human mobility.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as Migration Studies, Demography, Political or Social Science, Statistics, Econometrics, Public Health, Sustainability Science, or Data Science. A University degree in these fields is also acceptable if accompanied by sufficient professional experience. Accreditation from recognized institutions listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database is necessary.

Experience:
The position requires substantial experience in information management, reporting, and data analysis, particularly in demographic and population studies, human mobility, and migration. Candidates should have practical field experience and expertise in geographic and thematic domains relevant to displacement and migration. Experience with data collection, processing, and analysis for research and policy writing is crucial, as is familiarity with mixed migration data analyses. Proficiency in self-service analytics and data visualization applications, as well as programming languages, is desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for all applicants, both oral and written. Knowledge of Arabic and another UN official language (such as French, Spanish, Russian, or Chinese) is advantageous. Proficiency in required languages will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Additional Notes:
The position is a one-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension. It is categorized as a professional vacancy and requires international mobility for recruited staff. The selection process may be used to fill similar positions in various duty stations, and recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment for 24 months. The appointment is subject to medical fitness certification and compliance with residency or visa requirements.
