Job Overview: The intern will play a crucial role in strengthening the capacities of partner countries and their institutions to effectively finance and implement Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The Partnering for Readiness team at GIZ is focused on equipping partner countries and their national and regional institutions with the necessary institutional and technical expertise to independently access climate finance. The mission of this team is to establish a knowledge hub that facilitates access to and readiness for climate finance, while also creating a collaborative platform for partner countries and institutions to learn from one another. A significant emphasis will be placed on financing adaptation to climate change, which is a critical aspect of the global response to climate challenges.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will work under the guidance of a supervisor and will be involved in various tasks related to accessing climate finance, particularly in connection with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and its readiness program. Responsibilities will include supporting colleagues in their engagements with partner countries, preparing knowledge materials, and facilitating exchanges on topics such as the direct access modality of the GCF, climate finance access for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and ensuring transparency and integrity in financial resource management. The intern will also assist in the development, implementation, and reporting of activities related to international climate finance access. Additional duties will encompass researching and producing informational materials, managing information and communication, preparing for workshops and meetings, and creating presentations on GIZ's climate finance readiness activities for both internal and external communication channels.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program or have recently completed a Master’s degree. They should possess initial experience in the field of climate change, particularly in areas such as international climate finance and policy, climate change adaptation and mitigation, or green financial systems. A solid understanding of development cooperation is essential, along with initial practical experience gained through relevant internships or part-time positions in developing countries. The ideal candidate will demonstrate analytical thinking, a structured working method, and strong oral and written communication skills. Additionally, the ability to work independently, even under time constraints, is crucial.
Educational Background: The position requires candidates to be currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program or to have completed their Master’s degree within six months prior to the start of the internship. This educational background is essential to ensure that the intern possesses the necessary theoretical knowledge and understanding of the complexities surrounding climate finance and development cooperation.
Experience: The intern should have some initial practical experience in the field of climate change, which can be acquired through internships or part-time jobs. This experience is important to ensure that the candidate is familiar with the challenges and opportunities present in the realm of international climate finance and policy, as well as the operational dynamics of development cooperation.
Languages: Business fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, proficiency in French and/or Spanish is considered an advantage, as it may enhance communication with diverse stakeholders and partner countries involved in climate finance initiatives.
