Job Overview:
The Principal Counsel position is a senior role within the Office of the General Counsel at the EBRD, primarily responsible for providing comprehensive legal and policy advice on various matters relevant to the Bank's operations. The Principal Counsel will work closely with different departments to ensure that legal risks are identified and managed effectively. This role involves drafting and reviewing legal documents, representing the Bank in legal proceedings, and contributing to the development of the Bank's policies and legal frameworks. The Principal Counsel will also engage with external law firms and participate in inter-departmental working groups to support the Bank's strategic initiatives. This position requires a strong understanding of international law and the specificities of working within an international organization, as well as excellent negotiation and project management skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal Counsel will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to: providing legal assistance to client departments on new and existing matters; preparing, drafting, and reviewing submissions and pleadings for national courts and arbitration; advising on the interpretation and application of the Bank's policies and legal framework; developing and maintaining template legal documentation; representing the Bank before the Administrative Review Committee and the Administrative Tribunal; supporting the HR & Organizational Development department on policy matters; conducting legal research and preparing memos on relevant issues; drafting and negotiating legal documentation; managing external law firms; contributing to knowledge management activities; assisting OGC management on specific assignments; participating in working groups to develop Bank policies; and mentoring junior staff.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess at least seven years of relevant experience in an international environment, with a strong background in international administrative law, international law, or trans-national legal issues. A university law degree in a relevant field is required, along with a post-graduate law degree or equivalent professional legal experience. Admission to practice law in at least one jurisdiction is preferred. Candidates should have a thorough understanding of the Bank's policies and operating procedures, as well as excellent command of the English language, particularly in drafting and negotiating legal documents. Knowledge of another official language of the EBRD or a language from any of the EBRD's countries of operations is advantageous. Strong negotiation, project management, and interpersonal skills are essential.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university law degree in a relevant field of law, complemented by a post-graduate law degree or significant professional legal experience. Candidates should have a solid academic foundation in both civil and common law systems, which may be beneficial for understanding the diverse legal contexts in which the EBRD operates.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of seven years of relevant legal experience, particularly in an international context. Experience working within an international organization or before its internal justice system is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of international legal frameworks and the ability to navigate complex legal issues effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent skills in drafting and negotiating legal documents.
