Job Overview:
The consultant position focuses on harmonizing the understanding and communication of green chemistry and sustainable chemistry principles among various stakeholders. The role is crucial in strengthening coherence in policymaking, education, research, and industrial applications related to these principles. The consultant will work remotely, contributing to the development of a coherent framework that aligns with international definitions and strategies from organizations such as OECD, UNEP, and the EU. This position requires the consultant to establish a compendium of private sector policies and initiatives within the Global Framework on Chemicals, specifically targeting sectors like food and agriculture, textiles, electronics, building and construction, and healthcare. The consultant will be evaluated based on the quality and timeliness of deliverables submitted in various formats, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, ensuring that all tasks are completed satisfactorily and accepted by the Officer-in-Charge.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive and quality-driven set of tasks that include:
  • Developing a coherent framework for green and sustainable chemistry that aligns with leading international definitions and strategies.
  • Reconciling and harmonizing the terms green chemistry and sustainable chemistry to ensure conceptual clarity across science, policy, and industry.
  • Establishing a compendium of private sector policies and initiatives related to the Global Framework on Chemicals.
  • Engaging with stakeholders across various sectors to gather insights and feedback on the framework.
  • Synthesizing complex concepts into clear and accessible formats for diverse audiences.
  • Submitting deliverables electronically in the required formats and ensuring timely acceptance by the Officer-in-Charge.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as chemistry, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, law, or environmental governance. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Furthermore, candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in the environmental, chemical, or sustainability sectors, demonstrating sound management of chemicals and chemical processes, as well as waste management. Expertise in green chemistry or sustainable chemistry is essential, along with the ability to integrate technical and policy perspectives effectively.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree or equivalent in a field related to chemistry, environment/natural sciences, environmental engineering, law, or environmental governance. A first-level university degree may be considered if accompanied by additional qualifying experience, specifically two years of relevant work experience in the field.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in sectors related to environmental science, chemistry, or sustainability. Candidates should have a proven track record in managing chemicals and chemical processes, as well as experience in waste management. Demonstrated expertise in green chemistry or sustainable chemistry is crucial, along with the ability to integrate both technical and policy perspectives effectively.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of any other UN language is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders and audiences.

This position is home-based and allows for remote work, with an expected duration of 2 months, amounting to 38 working days.
