Job Overview: The position of Interpreter/Translator for Unaccompanied Minors involves providing essential interpretation and translation services within the context of IOM's accommodation centers for unaccompanied migrant children. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in facilitating effective communication between IOM staff and the unaccompanied minors (UMC), ensuring that their needs are understood and met. This role requires not only linguistic skills but also cultural sensitivity and the ability to act as a mediator during the UMC's adjustment to their new environment. The interpreter/translator will assist in various capacities, including translating information materials, facilitating communication with health providers, and providing support during interactions with public authorities. The position is vital for ensuring that UMC receive the necessary support and services to thrive in their new surroundings.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide interpretation services to facilitate effective communication between IOM staff and unaccompanied migrant children (UMC).
Translate written materials and information to be disseminated to UMC, ensuring clarity and cultural appropriateness.
Act as a cultural mediator to assist UMC in adjusting to their new environment.
Facilitate communication between UMC and health providers, ensuring that medical needs are understood and addressed.
Assist UMC in interactions with public authorities and local services, providing necessary support and guidance.
Gather and relay information to IOM staff to enhance understanding of the UMC's perceptions and needs.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the Shelter Coordinator or Project Coordinator, contributing to the overall success of the project.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school degree or certificate, with a bachelor's degree in Interpretation/Translation, Social Science, Humanities, or a relevant discipline considered an advantage. Previous experience in a similar role, particularly in direct assistance to migrants or refugees, is preferred. Familiarity with working in a multicultural environment is also advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate computer literacy in standard software applications, such as MS Office, and possess a valid driver's license with at least five years of driving experience, which is considered an advantage.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a high school degree or certificate. A bachelor's degree in Interpretation/Translation, Social Science, Humanities, or a related field is preferred and will be viewed favorably during the selection process. Candidates must have graduated from accredited universities recognized in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: Candidates should have previous experience in a similar role, which may include certification or training in interpretation or translation. Experience working directly with migrants and/or refugees is preferred, as is familiarity with the challenges faced by these populations. Additionally, experience in a multicultural environment is considered an asset, as it demonstrates the ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts effectively.
Languages: A working knowledge of English or Greek is required for this position. Fluency in Arabic, both written and oral, is mandatory, as it is essential for effective communication with the UMC. Proficiency in other languages, particularly those spoken by migrant populations, may be beneficial and will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, and only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Greece will be eligible for consideration. The appointment will be contingent upon medical fitness certification and verification of residency, visa, and other necessary authorizations.
