Job Overview: The position of Legal Advisor for Unaccompanied Minors is crucial in supporting the legal needs of unaccompanied migrant children residing in IOM's Accommodation Centers. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and Shelter Coordinator, providing legal advice and assistance to minors regarding their rights and legal status. This role involves organizing information sessions, offering legal assistance during asylum processes, and ensuring that the legal needs of the children are met in compliance with national and international laws. The advisor will also maintain communication with legal guardians and government authorities to advocate for the best interests of the minors, ensuring they receive the necessary support and guidance throughout their legal journeys.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice to unaccompanied minors in individual and group sessions regarding their rights and legal status.
Organize and conduct information sessions on legal rights and procedures relevant to minors, including asylum processes and family reunification.
Assist minors in applying for international protection, residence permits, and other legal documents.
Maintain accurate records of legal actions taken and ensure compliance with deadlines for legal procedures.
Conduct research on legal issues and provide counseling on relevant matters.
Collaborate with legal guardians and government authorities to ensure the well-being of minors.
Travel as necessary to fulfill legal obligations related to the minors' cases.
Ensure all documentation is updated and managed according to confidentiality protocols.
Contribute to internal and external reports regarding legal activities and outcomes. 1
Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Required Qualifications:
University degree in Law from an accredited institution.
Minimum of one year of relevant work experience in legal practice, preferably in the context of migration and refugee law.
License to practice law or certification from a relevant professional association.
Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Previous experience providing legal counseling to unaccompanied children is an advantage.
Awareness of Refugee and Immigration Law, including national laws and international conventions.
Experience working in a multicultural environment is preferred.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a university degree in Law from an accredited academic institution. A Master's degree in Law, International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights, or a related field is considered an advantage. Accredited institutions are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database, ensuring that the educational qualifications meet international standards.
Experience: Candidates should have at least one year of relevant professional experience, ideally in the field of migration and refugee law. Experience in providing legal counseling to unaccompanied minors is highly desirable. Familiarity with asylum administrative procedures and the legal landscape surrounding migration is essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in using computer applications, particularly MS Office, to manage legal documentation and communication effectively.
Languages: Fluency in English or French (level B1/B2) and Greek (both written and oral) is required for this position. Proficiency in these languages will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and oral assessments. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those spoken by the migrant population, would be considered an asset.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, and only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Greece will be considered. The appointment is contingent upon medical fitness certification and verification of residency and visa requirements.
