Job Overview:
The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch is seeking an intern for its Berlin office. This internship is designed for individuals who are currently enrolled students and is intended to provide them with practical experience in development and fundraising within a large international non-profit organization. The internship will last for three months, requiring a full-time commitment of up to 35 hours per week. The ideal candidate should be available from mid-February 2026 to mid-May 202
  • Interns will gain valuable skills in event planning, database management, and donor relations, while also learning about the organization's priority human rights issues. The internship experience will be enriched by participation in planning meetings, department meetings, and in-house training sessions, allowing interns to apply their academic knowledge in a professional context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary focus of the internship will be on event planning for HRW Berlin's major fundraising event, the 2026 Voices for Justice Dinner, scheduled for April 24, 202
  • Interns will assist with various aspects of event logistics and planning, including drafting and editing documents related to donor relations, supporting the creation of graphic design and event materials, and maintaining database records. Additionally, interns will engage in donor communication and outreach efforts, ensuring effective engagement with potential donors. Other responsibilities may arise based on the intern's interests and the department's needs, providing a dynamic and engaging work environment.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be enrolled students for the duration of the internship and should ideally be studying in Germany. The internship must be a compulsory component of their academic program, and applicants must be eligible to submit a 'Bescheinigung über ein Pflichtpraktikum' prior to starting. Successful candidates will be well-organized, self-motivated, reliable, flexible, and detail-oriented, with strong time management skills. A demonstrated interest in fundraising, outreach, and special events within a human rights context is essential. Applicants should also have a commitment to human rights and international issues, along with the ability to effectively represent HRW's mission and programs. Excellent oral and written communication skills in both German and English are mandatory, and proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Excel is required. Experience working collaboratively within a team is desirable, and frequent attendance in the office and at events is expected.

Educational Background:
The position requires applicants to be enrolled students, preferably in a program that necessitates a mandatory internship as part of their studies. This internship is particularly suited for students pursuing degrees related to human rights, international relations, development studies, or similar fields, as it provides practical experience that complements their academic learning.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to human rights and international issues. Languages:
Fluency in both German and English is required for this position, as excellent communication skills in both languages are critical for donor relations and outreach efforts. Additional Notes:
This internship is a full-time position, requiring a commitment of up to 35 hours per week over a three-month period. Interns will receive a gross monthly stipend of EUR 450 to help offset living expenses, in accordance with HRW policy. Students may also have the opportunity to arrange academic credit for their internship experience. Frequent attendance in the office and participation in events is required, and applicants must possess valid work authorization in Germany for the duration of the internship.
