Job Overview:
The Assistant Technical Officer, Nutrition - CMAM position is crucial in addressing the severe acute malnutrition (SAM) crisis among children under five in the Borno State of Nigeria. The incumbent will be responsible for implementing nutrition rehabilitation programs for SAM cases, ensuring that children receive the necessary therapeutic feeds and medical care to prevent further deterioration of their health. This role involves not only direct patient care but also community outreach and education to raise awareness about malnutrition and its prevention. The Assistant Technical Officer will work closely with the Technical Officer, Health and Nutrition, to develop and execute a comprehensive Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) workplan, monitor program performance, and ensure that all protocols are followed. The position requires a proactive approach to identifying and addressing complications in patients, as well as a commitment to providing high-quality care in challenging environments. The successful candidate will play a vital role in improving the nutritional status of vulnerable populations and contributing to the overall health outcomes in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Technical Officer, Nutrition - CMAM include leading community outreach activities to identify cases of malnutrition, conducting mid-upper arm circumference screenings, and providing outpatient therapeutic program (OTP) services in target communities and IDP camps. The incumbent will be responsible for defaulter tracing, follow-up visits, and delivering key health messages at OTP sites. They will oversee the timely identification of complications and ensure appropriate referrals to stabilization centers based on established criteria. The Assistant Technical Officer will develop and implement a CMAM workplan, monitor malnutrition trends, and conduct mortality audits. They will support the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) unit during assessments and focus group discussions, ensuring accurate documentation of services and performance indicators. The role also involves managing SAM children with complications, conducting health checks, and ensuring adherence to treatment protocols. The incumbent will maintain inventory of nutrition supplies, oversee the preparation of therapeutic feeds, and provide education to beneficiaries. Additionally, they will compile statistical data and draft reports on program activities, supporting nutrition surveys and assessments as needed. Other duties may be assigned as required.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for the Assistant Technical Officer, Nutrition - CMAM position should possess a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Nursing or a medical degree (MBBS) with relevant experience. A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a clinical setting is required, with a preference for candidates who have worked with humanitarian organizations. Extensive knowledge of infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in humanitarian contexts is essential, along with the ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively with vulnerable populations. Proven experience in working with internally displaced persons (IDPs), refugees, and host communities is highly desirable. The candidate should also demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to prepare program reports and adapt to challenging working conditions.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Nursing or a medical degree (MBBS) to qualify for the Assistant Technical Officer, Nutrition - CMAM position. The educational background should include training in nutrition, public health, or a related field, with a focus on maternal and child health. Additional certifications or training in nutrition management, particularly in emergency settings, would be advantageous.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have 1-3 years of relevant experience in a clinical or humanitarian setting. Experience working with malnutrition cases, particularly in emergency contexts, is essential. Familiarity with community-based nutrition programs and the ability to engage with local communities effectively are also important. Previous experience in monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programs will be considered an asset.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Proficiency in local languages spoken in the Borno State region is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with beneficiaries and community members. Strong communication skills are essential for delivering health education messages and conducting outreach activities.

This position is full-time and may require the incumbent to work in challenging conditions, including remote locations and with limited resources. The role involves a significant amount of fieldwork, and the candidate must be willing to stay at the local government area (LGA) for extended periods.
