Job Overview:
The National Consultant position is focused on reviewing submissions from a poetry competition held in conjunction with the 2024 International Human Rights Day celebration in Monrovia. The consultant will utilize their technical expertise to evaluate all poems submitted, preparing a comprehensive list of recommended works and their creators. This role involves providing technical and advisory support, including editing and proofreading, to ensure the final compilation of poems is ready for printing and publication. The consultant will work closely with the Country Representative of the OHCHR Liberia Office and technical staff to ensure that the selected poems reflect the themes of human rights and are suitable for inclusion in the collection titled 'Poetry for Human Rights - A Collection from Liberia.' The expected duration of this consultancy is from October 1, 2025, to October 31, 2025.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The National Consultant will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
  • Reviewing all poems submitted for the 2024 human rights poetry competition, applying technical expertise to assess their quality and relevance.
  • Compiling a comprehensive list of recommended poems and their creators, including those honored during the celebration.
  • Providing technical support in the form of editing and proofreading to ensure the poems are polished and ready for publication.
  • Arranging the final compilation of selected poems for printing, ensuring that they meet the required standards for publication.
  • Collaborating with the OHCHR team to ensure that the selected works align with the organization's mission and the themes of human rights.
  • Submitting the final list of recommended poems to the OHCHR for consideration, ensuring that the selection process is transparent and well-documented.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of a master's degree in education, literature, gender studies, research, human rights, or a related social science field. Additionally, applicants should have at least seven years of professional experience in literature or poetry, either as a teacher, practitioner, or researcher. A minimum of three years of experience in analyzing poems and conducting literature research is required. Experience working within a literature department is considered an advantage. Familiarity with the human rights landscape in Liberia and an understanding of human rights principles will be beneficial for this role. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical abilities and a proven understanding of poetry, along with excellent writing and public speaking skills.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a master's degree in a relevant field such as education, literature, gender studies, research, human rights, or other related social sciences. This advanced degree is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to effectively review and analyze poetry submissions.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of professional experience in the field of literature or poetry, which can include roles as a teacher, practitioner, or researcher. Additionally, candidates should have at least three years of experience specifically focused on analyzing poems and conducting literature research. This level of experience is crucial for the consultant to effectively evaluate submissions and provide insightful recommendations for the poetry collection.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also required, as it is another working language of the UN. Furthermore, familiarity with an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
