Job Posting Organization:
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1951, with a mission to promote humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. IOM operates in over 100 countries and has more than 10,000 employees worldwide. The organization focuses on various aspects of migration, including humanitarian assistance, integration, and cultural orientation for migrants and refugees. IOM's work is guided by the principles of inclusion, respect for diversity, and the promotion of ethical standards in migration management.

Job Overview:
The Cross-Cultural Facilitator (CCF) position is integral to the Norwegian Cultural Orientation Programme (NORCO), which aims to prepare children aged 5 to 10 years for their resettlement in Norway. The CCF will deliver tailored PDO sessions that introduce young refugees to key aspects of Norwegian society, including the education system and cultural norms. This role requires the CCF to engage with children in their first country of asylum or transit country, ensuring that they are well-informed and prepared for their new life in Norway. The CCF will undergo a two-week in-house training program to equip them with the necessary teaching methodologies and content related to Norwegian resettlement and integration before embarking on field missions. The CCF will be responsible for creating a supportive and engaging learning environment that fosters understanding and adaptation to Norwegian culture.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The CCF will be responsible for delivering orientation sessions to Norway-bound quota refugees aged 5 to 1
  • This includes providing essential information about Norwegian society, the education system, and cultural norms, as outlined in IOM’s PDO curriculum for children. The CCF will prepare participants for the Norwegian kindergarten and primary school environment through interactive activities and teaching methods that reflect the Norwegian educational system. The CCF will also be expected to maintain professional communication with the IOM Norway office, deliver results within the agreed Terms of Reference, and submit reports and other deliverables on time. Additionally, the CCF must demonstrate cultural sensitivity and adapt their teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of the children they are working with.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess professional competence in teaching children, ideally with experience in Norwegian kindergarten and/or primary school settings. A strong understanding of Norwegian life and society, particularly through practical experience, is essential. Previous experience related to the integration of refugee or migrant children in Norway is highly desirable. The CCF must also demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and oral, tailored to engaging and educating children, as well as a strong awareness of cultural differences and sensitivity towards diverse backgrounds.

Educational Background:
While specific educational qualifications are not explicitly stated, a background in education, child development, or a related field would be advantageous for this position. The CCF should have a solid understanding of pedagogical approaches suitable for young children, particularly in a multicultural context.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have professional experience in teaching children, with a preference for those who have worked in Norwegian educational settings. Understanding the integration challenges faced by refugee or migrant children in Norway is crucial, as is the ability to communicate effectively with this demographic. Experience in delivering educational content in a culturally sensitive manner is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in Norwegian and English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, proficiency in Sudanese Arabic, Dari, or Turkish is considered an advantage, as these languages align with the backgrounds of the refugee populations being served. The selection process will include evaluations of language proficiency, which may involve written and/or oral assessments.

Additional Notes:
The CCF position is based on a need-based contractual arrangement, with travel required for training in Oslo and for delivering PDO sessions in various countries where refugees are located. The consultant will typically engage in field missions lasting one to two weeks, with the possibility of one to three deployments per year. Candidates should be aware that any offer is subject to funding confirmation and that IOM has a zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct. Consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses and must provide proof of coverage before commencing work. IOM does not charge any fees during the recruitment process and only accepts applications submitted through its online recruitment system.
