Job Overview: The Editorial Associate position within the Languages, Publications and Conference Management (LPC) section of ICAO is crucial for ensuring the timely and accurate production of Chinese publications. The role involves proofreading, editing, and formatting documents to meet high-quality standards, which are essential for the implementation of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). The Editorial Associate will work independently on assigned tasks while collaborating closely with the English editorial team and other language sections. The position requires a strong command of the Chinese language and a good working knowledge of English, as well as familiarity with ICAO terminology and editorial conventions. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of Chinese publications and ensuring they are consistent with the English versions, thus playing a vital role in the organization's multilingual communication efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the Chief/Supervisor to ensure timely processing of Chinese publications, including proofreading, editing, correcting, formatting, and releasing both saleable and non-saleable publications.
Typeset Chinese publications for both print and electronic formats, ensuring consistency with English versions.
Maintain and verify the Word and PDF versions of Chinese publications, ensuring they are the definitive copies for the organization.
Prepare materials for internal and external translators and editors, including producing relevant electronic files and supporting external collaborators.
Stay updated on Chinese language usage, ICAO terminology, and desktop publishing techniques, conducting research as necessary.
Perform other related duties as assigned, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the LPC section.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a diploma of College Studies (DEC) or equivalent education. Training or certification in languages is desirable. A minimum of six years of experience related to editing and document production processes is essential, including experience in editing, proofreading, and page make-up. Familiarity with graphic design software such as InDesign and/or Illustrator is desirable, as is experience with ICAO operations and publications. The ability to work collaboratively in complex processes with high production levels is also important.
Educational Background: The position requires a diploma of College Studies (DEC) or equivalent education. Additional training or certification in languages is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's qualifications for the role.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least six years of professional experience related to editing and document production processes. This includes a strong background in editing, proofreading, and page make-up, which are critical for ensuring the quality and accuracy of publications. Experience with graphic design software and familiarity with ICAO operations will be advantageous.
Languages: The position requires an excellent command of Chinese, either as a mother tongue or as the language of education, along with a sound knowledge of grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation. A very good working knowledge of English is essential, while knowledge of any other ICAO language (Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish) is considered desirable.
Additional Notes: This position is fixed-term for an initial period of three years, with the first year being probationary for external candidates. Applicants must hold Canadian citizenship, Canadian Permanent Residency, or a work permit to be eligible. ICAO staff members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting their status as international civil servants, adhering to the Standards of Conduct defined in the ICAO Service Code. The organization offers an attractive benefits package in accordance with the policies of the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC). The net base salary for this position is CAD 52,452 per annum.
