Job Overview: This internship is designed to provide a comprehensive experience in the Guided Tours Unit (GTU) of the Visitors Services Section, which is part of the Outreach Division within the Department of Global Communications. The primary function of this internship is to engage with the public and educate them about the work and ideals of the United Nations. Interns will be expected to assist in planning and organizing outreach activities, providing support for guided tours and briefings, conducting research on UN thematic issues, and offering general office support. The internship is full-time, requiring a commitment of five days a week (35 hours), and is intended to last for six months, starting on November 18, 202
Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member and will have the opportunity to contribute to various projects and initiatives that promote the UN's mission.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will have a diverse set of responsibilities that may include: assisting with the planning and organization of outreach activities aimed at educating the public about the UN's work; providing logistical support for guided tours, briefings, and events; conducting research on various UN thematic issues; offering general office support such as drafting correspondence, maintaining files and databases, and organizing meetings; assisting in the creation of promotional materials including photographs and videos for Visitors Services; drafting content for social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter; responding to visitor inquiries both in-person and in writing; and assisting in the development and analysis of surveys regarding visitors' experiences. Interns may also be required to perform other duties as assigned by their supervisors.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent), or (b) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study related to the internship is necessary. Candidates should possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word and MS PowerPoint. The ability to draft short articles and social media posts is desirable, as is the capability to take photographs and videos, along with basic editing skills.
Educational Background: Candidates should have completed or be in the process of completing a university degree, with a preference for fields related to communications, public relations, international relations, or similar disciplines. A bachelor's degree or higher is required, and relevant coursework or experience in media, public information, or social media management is advantageous.
Experience: While no prior professional work experience is required for this internship, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic experience or involvement in activities related to public information, communications, or social media. Interns should be prepared to engage in a learning environment and contribute to the team's objectives effectively.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of French, which is another working language of the United Nations, is considered an advantage. Proficiency in additional official UN languages may also enhance a candidate's application.
