Job Overview:
The Energy Finance Specialist will play a crucial role in advancing UNDP's mission in Kenya through the 'Energy for Growth in Africa' programme. This position involves implementing partnership initiatives and working closely with the UNDP Country Office in Kenya to ensure effective coordination. The primary focus will be on identifying and supporting national and country-specific activities that can accelerate the clean energy transition, driving progress toward UNDP's energy objectives in the region. The specialist will provide strategic insights and technical expertise to ensure alignment with both national needs and global energy goals, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Kenya. The role will require creating new initiatives in a cohesive manner, emphasizing sustainable energy and climate change actions tailored to the Kenyan context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Energy Finance Specialist will act as the focal point for the UNDP Rome Center's 'Energy for Growth initiative in Africa', providing essential advice and technical expertise, advocating for change, building relationships, and sharing knowledge in the areas of clean energy transition. Key responsibilities include identifying regional and country-specific initiatives that facilitate energy transition, enhancing the capabilities of the UNDP Kenya Office in the clean energy and climate sectors, and developing a country engagement strategy for Kenya. The specialist will engage with energy sector stakeholders, lead project risk mitigation efforts, provide technical expertise for clean energy projects, and prepare regular reports on project progress and stakeholder engagement. The role also involves building strategic partnerships with relevant UN agencies, government institutions, and private sector organizations to pursue institutional and policy development for effective implementation of the Energy for Growth initiative.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (or equivalent) in Renewable Energy, Climate Change, International Development, Finance, Energy Policy, Engineering, or related fields. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the mentioned areas combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be considered. A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience is required for those with a master’s degree, or 9 years for those with a bachelor’s degree, in executing clean energy projects in Kenya, offering policy guidance and program support in sustainable development, climate change, and green growth.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in fields related to renewable energy, climate change, international development, finance, energy policy, or engineering. Candidates with a first-level university degree in these areas, along with additional qualifying experience, will also be considered. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of clean energy projects and the broader context of sustainable development.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in executing clean energy projects, with a focus on policy guidance and program support in sustainable development and climate change. Experience in analyzing energy projects, energy finance structures, and regulatory frameworks for the energy sector is crucial. Additionally, prior work experience with UNDP or similar international organizations is highly desirable, particularly in the context of energy access and transition.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required for this position. Knowledge or fluency in other official UN languages is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to the organization's mission effectively.

Additional Notes:
This position is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing energy access and promoting sustainable energy solutions in Kenya. The Energy Finance Specialist will work under the direct supervision of the 'Energy for Growth in Africa' team lead at the UNDP Rome Center, with a second reporting line to the Deputy Resident Representative for Programmes at the Kenya Country Office.
