Job Overview: The consultant will play a crucial role in providing reliable technical coordination for program and project planning and preparation activities within the Education, Youth and Advocacy Unit of UNEP. This position requires the consultant to work under some supervision while seeking advice and reporting to the supervisor as necessary. The consultant will be responsible for accurately preparing reports and consistently applying appropriate policies, guidelines, and procedures effectively and promptly. The role involves liaising with colleagues and concerned parties both internally and externally, ensuring that the objectives of the unit are met. The consultant will be based in New Delhi, working closely with the Chief of Youth, Education and Advocacy Unit and the Head of the India Office, contributing to the implementation of various youth projects and initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant's duties and responsibilities include acting as the focal point for key partners of the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge (TTPC) program, providing guidance for reporting and project implementation in South Asia. The consultant will also work on communications and outreach by delivering success stories from the TTPC program and organizing events to promote it. Additionally, the consultant will draft monthly progress reports from partners, compile financial and narrative reports for donors, and work closely with UNEP staff to conclude activities of TTPC phase 5.
Specific tasks include collaborating with Oxford University for evaluations and research on the Tide Turner program results, implementing the TTPC in Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, and enhancing fundraising efforts by identifying potential donors and partners at the national and regional levels. The consultant will also work to expand the non-formal YEA agenda in India, including initiatives like Sport for Nature and Playing for Planet.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in communications, social science, psychology, international relations, political science, commerce, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. At least three years of professional experience in project management and youth programs is required. The ability to deliver highly complex projects of a global nature efficiently and effectively is desired. Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong drafting, formulation, and reporting skills, are essential. Proficiency in standard software applications is also required, as well as self-motivation and the ability to work with minimal supervision under tight deadlines in a demanding work environment.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as communications, social science, psychology, international relations, political science, commerce, or a related discipline. A first-level university degree may be accepted in combination with additional qualifying experience, demonstrating the importance of both formal education and practical experience in this role.
Experience: The position requires at least three years of professional experience in project management and youth programs. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing complex projects on a global scale, showcasing their ability to navigate challenges and deliver results effectively. Experience in working with international organizations or in a multicultural environment is highly valued.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is considered an asset, as it is also one of the working languages, which may enhance communication and collaboration within the organization.
Additional Notes: The position is expected to last for a duration of six months. The consultant will be working full-time and will be based in New Delhi, with responsibilities that may require travel to other locations in South Asia.
