Job Overview: The Driver position at FHI 360 is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of staff, consultants, and program goods to various locations including offices, guest houses, hospitals, and warehouses. The role requires adherence to safety protocols and vehicle maintenance standards, as well as the ability to respond to emergency situations. The driver will work under the supervision of the logistics-officer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">logistics officer and is expected to maintain a high level of professionalism while representing the organization. This position is vital in supporting the organization's mission to provide emergency assistance to those in need, particularly in the context of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Northeast Nigeria.
Duties and Responsibilities: The driver will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: checking the vehicle before and after use, ensuring all necessary items are present and functioning, reporting any defects or damages immediately, submitting monthly mileage and fuel consumption reports, ensuring all vehicle journeys are authorized, recording movements in a logbook, maintaining valid vehicle documentation, ensuring the safety of passengers, adhering to speed limits and fleet policies, reporting incidents or accidents, and supporting logistics and warehouse assistants as required. The driver must also ensure that the vehicle is kept clean and well-maintained, and must be able to diagnose minor faults and carry out basic repairs when necessary.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a valid SSCE/NECO Certificate Examination and have 1 to 3 years of experience working as a driver with reputable organizations, such as international NGOs, corporate entities, or government agencies. Experience as a mechanic or auto-electrician is desirable, as is experience working in insecure locations, particularly in Northeast Nigeria. A valid national driving license is mandatory, and candidates should have excellent verbal communication and listening skills, as well as proficiency in English and Hausa. Computer literacy, particularly in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is also required.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a minimum of a secondary school certificate, specifically the SSCE or NECO. This foundational education is essential for understanding vehicle operation and maintenance, as well as for fulfilling the communication and reporting requirements of the role.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have between 1 to 3 years of relevant driving experience, particularly in a humanitarian or development context. Experience in challenging environments, such as conflict zones or areas with limited infrastructure, is highly valued. Familiarity with the local geography and road conditions in Northeast Nigeria will be an advantage.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory for effective communication within the organization and with external stakeholders. Additionally, the ability to communicate in Hausa is highly desirable, as it facilitates interaction with local communities and beneficiaries.
