Job Overview:
The position of Electrical Engineer specialized in Renewable Energy/Solar at UNICEF Syria is crucial for addressing the ongoing electricity crisis in the country, which has severely impacted public health services and education. The engineer will be responsible for designing, planning, implementing, and monitoring solar projects aimed at providing reliable energy to public services such as health facilities and schools. This role involves collaborating with the Ministry of Health to support the solarization of public health facilities, ensuring that essential health services can be delivered effectively. The engineer will also establish a unified framework for solar implementation at the country office level, ensuring alignment with UNICEF's best practices and global guidance. The position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams to achieve impactful results for children and communities in Syria.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop technical tools and systems for solar energy projects, ensuring they meet the specific needs of public services.
  • Conduct capacity building and knowledge transfer sessions for local staff and partners to enhance their understanding and skills in solar energy implementation.
  • Oversee procurement processes and contractual agreements related to solar power systems, ensuring compliance with UNICEF's standards and regulations.
  • Prepare and submit detailed reports on project progress, challenges, and outcomes to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with UNICEF Programmes and Operations teams to integrate solar energy solutions into broader humanitarian and development initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of solar projects, making recommendations for improvements and adjustments as necessary.
  • Engage with local communities and stakeholders to promote awareness and understanding of solar energy benefits and initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in electrical engineering is required, with a specialization in solar and renewable energy preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering may be accepted with an additional two years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in designing, modeling, and managing photovoltaic (PV) systems installations.
  • Proven experience in preparing technical reports, proposals, and feasibility studies related to solar energy projects.
  • Proficiency in using software tools such as Dialux, Autocad, Revit, Etap, TIA Portal, Ecodial, Matlab, Simulink, PSIM, PVSyst, Helioscope, Sketchup, PVSOL, and Homer Pro.
  • Relevant experience in development, fragile settings, and humanitarian contexts is highly desirable.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in electrical engineering, with a specialization in solar and renewable energy preferred. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary technical knowledge and skills to effectively design and implement solar energy projects in challenging environments.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the field of renewable energy, specifically in designing, modeling, and managing photovoltaic (PV) systems installations. Candidates should have a proven track record of supervising the execution of PV systems and preparing technical reports and proposals. Experience in sourcing and procuring PV systems products is also essential, as well as familiarity with the challenges faced in development and humanitarian contexts.

Languages:
Fluency in Arabic and English, both written and verbal, is required for this position. This language proficiency is crucial for effective communication with local stakeholders, partners, and UNICEF teams, ensuring that technical concepts can be clearly conveyed and understood. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
