Job Posting Organization:
The UNOPS Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office (HAMCO) was established in 2009 and operates an established Operations Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It oversees a portfolio of engagements across four countries in the Horn of Africa: Ethiopia, Djibouti, Sudan, and South Sudan. The organization focuses on providing services in various sectors including Infrastructure, Procurement, Project Management, HR and Transactional Services, and Fund Management, particularly in Health, Education, Agriculture, and Resilient Infrastructure. The mission of UNOPS is to support countries in need, assist communities, and empower partners by delivering on its mandate in infrastructure, procurement, and project management throughout the Horn of Africa.

Job Overview:
The Finance Intern position is designed as a learning and working opportunity for recent graduates. The intern will assist the Finance team at the UNOPS Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office, gaining practical experience and exposure to a professional environment that supports their personal and professional development. The intern will work under the supervision of the Finance Senior Officer and will be involved in various financial tasks that contribute to the overall functioning of the Finance Unit. This role is particularly suited for individuals looking to enhance their skills in finance and accounting within an international organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Finance Intern will be responsible for supporting the Finance Unit in several key functions, including but not limited to:
  • Assisting with treasury and payments functions, ensuring timely and accurate processing of financial transactions.
  • Providing accounting and administrative support to maintain accurate financial records.
  • Contributing to financial reporting and control processes to ensure compliance with organizational standards.
  • Facilitating knowledge building and sharing within the team. Specific tasks include: - Proper filing of financial documentation to maintain organized records. - Assisting in the preparation of payments by verifying supporting documentation and compliance with internal procedures. - Reviewing payment requests to ensure accuracy and completeness. - Preparing project financial reports to provide insights into financial performance. - Assisting with VAT refund claims and following up on their status. - Supporting budget preparation activities to ensure financial planning aligns with project goals. - Performing other duties as assigned by the Finance Senior Officer to support the overall objectives of the Finance Unit.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university degree program or have graduated within the last three years at the time of application. The preferred field of study is Accounting or Finance. While professional work experience is not required, familiarity with financial concepts and practices is advantageous. Knowledge of Google Suite applications is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to perform tasks efficiently.

Educational Background:
To qualify for the Finance Intern position, candidates must be enrolled in or have recently completed a degree program in a relevant field such as Accounting or Finance. This educational background is essential to ensure that the intern possesses the foundational knowledge necessary to understand financial processes and contribute effectively to the Finance Unit's operations.

Experience:
The position does not require prior professional work experience, making it an ideal opportunity for recent graduates or students looking to gain practical experience in finance. However, any relevant coursework or internships in finance or accounting will be beneficial. Familiarity with Google Suite applications is also an advantage, as it indicates the candidate's ability to utilize modern tools for financial management and reporting.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Candidates who possess knowledge of another UN official language will have an added advantage, as this can enhance communication within the diverse international environment of UNOPS.
