This position is unpaid and requires interns to work five days a week, totaling 40 hours. The intern will work under the supervision of a designated staff member within the CPCJ Programme. The role is crucial in supporting the Programme for Legal Empowerment and Aid Delivery (PLEAD) Phase II, which aims to strengthen the rule of law, enhance access to justice, and improve accountability in Kenya's justice system. The intern will be responsible for documenting activities, developing promotional materials, and contributing to communication strategies that align with UNODC's branding and outreach objectives. This position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in communications within a significant international organization, while also contributing to meaningful initiatives that impact justice delivery in Kenya.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
Communication and Visibility: Documenting activities and events related to PLEAD through high-quality photography, videography, and written reports. Designing promotional materials such as infographics and brochures to enhance visibility. Drafting communication materials in line with PLEAD Communications Guidelines. Monitoring and evaluating communication efforts to ensure they align with UNODC branding.
Internal Communication: Preparing internal reports and updates, maintaining an organized archive of communication materials, and supporting information flow within the PLEAD team and UNODC stakeholders.
Stakeholder and Event Support: Assisting in planning and coordinating events, providing logistical support, and preparing background documents and presentations. Documenting events and compiling post-event summaries.
Substantive Contributions: Assisting in preparing analytical content and knowledge products for the CPCJ Programme and managing PLEAD’s social media presence by drafting and updating content.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent), preferably in a field related to communications or public information. Additionally, applicants should be computer literate in standard software applications and have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations. A demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is also required. While professional work experience is not mandatory, a relevant field of study is essential.
Educational Background: Candidates should be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. Programme, or have recently completed such programmes, preferably in communications or public information. Proof of enrollment or completion will be required during the application process. Familiarity with specialized software applications such as MS Stream, Trello, and Canva is also necessary, along with the ability to record and edit video content.
Experience: While no professional work experience is required for this internship, applicants should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship. This could include projects, volunteer work, or other experiences that demonstrate a commitment to the field of communications or public information.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
