Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is situated within the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS) of the Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB) at UNODC. Interns will engage in various tasks that support the section's mission to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling. The role involves conducting background research, assisting in data collection and analysis, and contributing to the development of communication materials and strategic presentations. Interns will work closely with experienced professionals and gain valuable insights into the workings of international organizations and the complexities of global crime prevention efforts. This internship is designed to provide practical experience in a dynamic and impactful field, with a focus on enhancing the intern's understanding of law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">international law, policy development, and the operational aspects of UNODC's work.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a range of tasks, including but not limited to: conducting background research to assess country and regional situations regarding human trafficking and migrant smuggling; assisting in the development and dissemination of data collection instruments such as surveys; providing support in data collection by communicating with colleagues in field locations, compiling, and storing data; analyzing data and preparing reports; preparing briefing notes, statements, and presentations; supporting the preparation of strategic presentations for donors and stakeholders; contributing to the development of team strategies related to impact measurement and data collection principles; and carrying out other tasks related to the implementation of the UNODC Global Action against Trafficking in Persons and the Smuggling of Migrants as requested.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet specific criteria, including being enrolled in or having recently completed a graduate program or the final year of a bachelor's degree program. Candidates should have a background in criminology, law, political or social sciences, psychology, international relations, or a related field with a focus on data or research. Strong data analysis skills, good drafting abilities, and proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, are essential. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and possess the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Educational Background: Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Official written proof from the university supporting one of these possibilities must be attached to the application. Relevant fields of study include criminology, law, political or social sciences, psychology, international relations, or related disciplines with a focus on data or research.
Experience: While specific prior experience is not mandated, candidates should possess sound data analysis skills and demonstrate good drafting abilities. Experience in research, data collection, or related fields will be advantageous. Interns are expected to be proactive and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance the candidate's application.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid and requires a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week over a duration of six months. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
