Job Overview: The Trade Modeller position is integral to the African Trade Policy Centre's mission to enhance trade policy analysis and support the implementation of the AfCFTA. The consultant will be responsible for conducting econometric and computable general equilibrium (CGE) modelling-based analyses on the AfCFTA and other relevant reforms, such as changes in US tariffs and trade preferences from China to Africa. The role also involves integrating green finance considerations into trade policy analysis, ensuring that Africa's transition to a low-carbon economy is factored into trade and integration priorities. The consultant will work closely with the Project Officer and other team members to collect, compile, and analyze data, providing empirical analyses that inform trade policy decisions. The position requires a strong understanding of trade dynamics in Africa and the ability to navigate complex economic issues that impact the continent's trade landscape.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will perform a variety of tasks under the guidance of the Director of the Regional Integration and Trade Division and the Coordinator of the African Trade Policy Centre. Key responsibilities include:
Collecting, compiling, and analyzing data for trade policy analysis, particularly for econometric and CGE models;
Conducting empirical analyses on the AfCFTA and its protocols, as well as other reforms, to assess their implications for Africa's trade;
Supporting the integration of green finance considerations into trade policy, focusing on trade-related risks and opportunities linked to a low-carbon economy;
Assisting in the planning, organization, and servicing of trade-related events, including training and courses;
Responding to ad-hoc requests as needed to support the Centre's objectives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Economics, Trade, Foreign Affairs, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of a master's degree. A minimum of six years of experience in research or analysis using econometric or CGE models is required, with a preference for experience in trade-related areas. Proficiency in using software such as STATA or GAMS for empirical analysis is also necessary. Knowledge of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and experience working in Africa are highly desirable qualifications.
Educational Background: The position requires an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Economics, Trade, or Foreign Affairs. Candidates with a first-level university degree may be considered if they have additional qualifying experience that meets the requirements of the role.
Experience: A minimum of six years of relevant experience in research or analysis using econometric or CGE models is essential for this position. Candidates should have a strong background in trade analysis and experience with empirical research methodologies. Familiarity with the African trade landscape and the AfCFTA is highly advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Full professional proficiency in French is desirable, as it would enhance communication and collaboration within the organization and with stakeholders.
