Job Overview:
The intern will work within the framework of UNESCO’s activities related to the Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers (RS|SR) and the Programme on Freedom and Safety of Scientists. Under the supervision of Anna Maria Majlöf and Konstantinos Tararas, the intern will contribute to various tasks aimed at implementing the Programme. This includes engaging with policymakers, collecting and monitoring data, building capacity, advocating for awareness, and establishing partnerships. The intern will also assist in finalizing an Assessment Tool on the freedom and safety of scientists, support the organization of policy dialogues, and help develop partnerships with stakeholders. The role is designed to provide the intern with a comprehensive understanding of how UNESCO operates and the significance of scientific freedom and safety in the global context.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's duties will include contributing to the implementation of the Programme on Freedom and Safety of Scientists, assisting in finalizing an Assessment Tool by incorporating expert inputs and coordinating with central services, supporting the organization of policy dialogues, preparing communication materials, managing logistical arrangements, and contributing to final reports. Additionally, the intern will assist in organizing a launch event for a publication related to human rights, develop partnerships with stakeholders, prepare inputs for UNESCO’s Executive Board, and undertake various tasks related to the organization of meetings and preparation of relevant documents. The intern will also be expected to draft correspondence, reports, briefings, and web entries as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent) or have graduated within the last 12 months with a Master’s degree or PhD. Studies should be in fields related to international relations, political sciences, social and human sciences, or human rights. Candidates should possess excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken, and knowledge of French or other UNESCO official languages (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish) will be considered an asset. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate computer literacy, particularly with tools like Microsoft Teams.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes enrollment in or recent graduation from a graduate programme, specifically a Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent second university degree. The fields of study should be relevant to the work of UNESCO, particularly in international relations, political sciences, social and human sciences, or human rights, which are crucial for understanding the context of the Programme on Freedom and Safety of Scientists.

Experience:
The level of experience needed for this position is primarily academic, as candidates should be either currently enrolled in a graduate programme or have graduated within the last 12 months.
