Job Overview: The Counter-Terrorism Intern position at UNODC is designed for individuals who are eager to gain practical experience in the field of counter-terrorism and criminal justice. The intern will be involved in various aspects of the Terrorism Prevention Branch (TPB), which focuses on providing technical assistance to countries in their efforts to prevent and counter terrorism. Interns will work under the supervision of experienced staff members and will have the opportunity to contribute to significant projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing global counter-terrorism efforts. This role is ideal for candidates who are passionate about law" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">international law, human rights, and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security issues, and who wish to make a meaningful impact in the field.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will undertake a variety of duties, including but not limited to: conducting research on criminal justice aspects of terrorism prevention; contributing to the development of background documents, presentations, briefing notes, summaries, talking points, and speeches; assisting in the organization of national and regional technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events, and conferences; attending meetings and taking notes as required; and performing other related tasks as necessary. This role requires a proactive approach and the ability to work collaboratively with team members and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and research skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken formats.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes either a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree in fields related to international relations, law, political science, or other relevant disciplines. Candidates who have a strong academic record and relevant coursework in counter-terrorism, human rights, or international law will be particularly well-suited for this position.
Experience: While prior work experience is not mandatory, any relevant internships, volunteer work, or academic projects related to counter-terrorism, criminal justice, or international law will be considered an asset. The internship is designed for individuals who are looking to gain practical experience and develop their skills in a professional setting.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English and Russian is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, or Spanish, is considered an advantage. Strong communication skills in these languages will enhance the intern's ability to contribute effectively to the team's objectives.
Additional Notes: This internship is unpaid, and interns are expected to work full-time, five days a week (40 hours).
