Job Overview: The Project/Grant Accountant will play a crucial role in coordinating and implementing CP projects in alignment with donor policies and CRS accounting standards. This position requires a thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the ability to manage financial transactions effectively throughout the project lifecycle. The accountant will be responsible for documenting financial transactions, compiling and analyzing account information, and delivering comprehensive financial reporting services. Depending on the complexity of the project/grant portfolio, the accountant may focus on either payable or receivable transactions, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Project/Grant Accountant will set and monitor sound accounting and financial reporting procedures for project/grant subrecipients and partners. Key responsibilities include ensuring the setup and maintenance of all necessary data for processing financial transactions, reviewing and validating supporting documentation, recording financial transactions with appropriate authorizations, and analyzing accounts for irregularities. The accountant will also assess and monitor subrecipient financial management processes, prepare periodic and ad hoc financial reports, assist with budget maintenance, and provide training on financial accounting policies. Additional duties include participating in proposal budget development, ensuring timely submission of liquidation documents, and coordinating grant closure activities as per the grant closure checklist.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration with relevant accounting courses, or a qualification in accounting such as CPA/ACCA or equivalent. A minimum of 3 years of experience is required for candidates with a Master's degree, while those with a Bachelor's degree should have at least 5 years of relevant experience, preferably in an international or local NGO setting. Familiarity with financial systems, budgeting, and expense analysis is preferred, along with knowledge of accounting software and USAID rules and regulations. Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio, is essential.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, with coursework in accounting. Candidates with professional accounting qualifications such as CPA or ACCA will also be considered. This educational foundation is critical for understanding complex financial systems and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience for candidates with a Master's degree and at least 5 years for those with a Bachelor's degree. Experience should be in roles with similar responsibilities, ideally within an international or local NGO context. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of financial management processes and the ability to analyze financial data effectively.
Languages: Proficiency in both Amharic and English is mandatory for this position. These language skills are essential for effective communication with internal teams, partners, and stakeholders involved in project implementation and financial reporting.
Additional Notes: This position is a definite period employment for one year, with the possibility of extension contingent upon project funding availability. The role may require travel of up to 50%. The Project/Grant Accountant will supervise the Project Assistant - Grant and will work closely with programming, operations, finance, and compliance staff, as well as external partners and consultants.
