Job Overview: The position of Editor for the International Labour Review (ILR) is a temporary assignment focused on contributing to the production of the English edition of the journal. The ILR is recognized as the leading multidisciplinary journal in the field of labor market institutions and economics, published quarterly in English, French, and Spanish. The role involves ensuring that the journal maintains high editorial standards while making complex research accessible and engaging for its audience. The editor will work closely with the Managing Editor and collaborate with authors, researchers, and the editorial team to refine and finalize articles for publication. This position is crucial for upholding the journal's commitment to rigorous analysis and scholarly excellence, while also engaging with contemporary labor market issues and policy debates.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Edit, redraft, and finalize highly technical research papers and book reviews in English, ensuring they meet the ILR's editorial standards for accuracy, coherence, clarity, and presentation.
Produce self-revised, commercially publishable English translations of research papers and book reviews originally written in Spanish and French.
Correspond with authors to secure approval for edited articles and clarify any substantive or referencing issues.
Adapt abstracts of ILR articles to effectively capture the main messages of complex research.
Oversee the finalization of assignments, collaborating with the REVUE team and the Open Library of Humanities (OLH) during the proofreading stages, and approve final proofs.
Conduct preliminary evaluations of unsolicited manuscripts as needed.
Respond to internal and external queries regarding editorial practices and contribute to the development of editorial procedures and guidelines.
Stay informed about developments in relevant research and policy areas, actively engaging with the terminology and analytical frameworks of various disciplines.
Attend relevant meetings associated with the ILR publication and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced level university degree in social sciences, languages, or law, or a first-level degree with two years of relevant experience. Additionally, candidates should have a strong technical specialization in social and labor issues on an international scale. The position requires excellent editing skills, drafting ability, and a deep understanding of the subject matter dealt with by the organization. Familiarity with the ILO's policies, programs, and procedures is essential, along with the ability to guide and advise lower-level staff on editorial aspects of electronic publishing.
Educational Background: An advanced level university degree in social sciences, languages, or law is required. Alternatively, a first-level degree with two years of relevant experience is acceptable. The educational background should provide a strong foundation in the relevant fields, enabling the candidate to engage effectively with complex labor market issues and contribute to high-quality editorial work.
Experience: Candidates should have at least seven years of professional experience in writing, translating, revising, and/or editing, with a strong focus on social and labor issues at an international level. This experience should demonstrate a depth of knowledge and understanding of a broad range of subjects or a high degree of specialization in a particular field relevant to the ILO's work.
Languages: The position requires perfect command of English, along with proficiency in both Spanish and French.
