Job Overview:
The International Gender Specialist position is designed to provide technical assistance and expert advice on gender equality and women's participation in democratic processes and elections. The role is crucial in enhancing women's representation in elected institutions within the Solomon Islands. The specialist will work closely with local stakeholders, including government entities, civil society organizations, and international partners, to develop strategies and implement initiatives that promote gender equality in political participation. The assignment is set to take place from August through December 2025, during which the specialist will be expected to conduct assessments, provide recommendations, and support the implementation of gender-focused policies and programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the current state of women's participation in democratic processes and elections in the Solomon Islands.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance women's representation in elected institutions, including training programs and capacity-building workshops for women candidates.
  • Collaborate with local stakeholders to promote gender-sensitive electoral processes and policies.
  • Provide expert advice on best practices for integrating gender considerations into electoral frameworks and political party structures.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives aimed at increasing women's political participation, providing regular reports and recommendations for improvement.
  • Facilitate dialogue and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders to foster a supportive environment for women's political engagement.
  • Ensure alignment of activities with UNDP's broader goals and objectives related to gender equality and democratic governance.

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in gender studies, political science, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in gender equality advocacy, particularly in the context of democratic governance and electoral processes.
  • Strong understanding of the political landscape and gender issues in the Solomon Islands or similar contexts.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and deadlines.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree (Master's or equivalent) in gender studies, political science, social sciences, or a related field. A PhD in a relevant discipline is preferred but not mandatory. Additional certifications or training in gender equality, women's rights, or electoral processes will be considered an asset.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in gender equality advocacy, with a focus on political participation and democratic governance. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or governmental bodies in the Pacific region is highly desirable. Proven track record of successfully implementing gender-focused programs and initiatives is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of local languages spoken in the Solomon Islands is an advantage but not required. Proficiency in other languages relevant to the region may also be beneficial.

This position is offered as an individual contractor role, with a contract duration from August to December 202
  • The role is full-time, requiring the contractor to be available for the duration of the assignment. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, in line with UNDP's policies for individual contractors. The recruitment process is open to both national and international candidates.
