Job Overview: The E T Consultant position is situated within the Eastern and Southern Africa Poverty Team, which is dedicated to addressing the multifaceted challenges of poverty in the region. The consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the analytical and operational engagements of the Poverty and Equity work program in Ethiopia. This position requires a strong focus on data analysis, survey preparation, and the dissemination of findings to inform policy decisions. The consultant will be expected to produce written analytical pieces on poverty, equity, and shared prosperity, contributing to the overall micro-monitoring efforts and engaging with various stakeholders to enhance pro-poor distributional impacts. The role demands creativity and innovation in research, with an emphasis on quantitative skills to support the analytical work in Ethiopia.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: preparing and analyzing surveys, census, and administrative data; creating data dissemination products such as maps and data portals; writing analytical reports and background papers on poverty and equity; collaborating with operational teams to enhance monitoring efforts; and contributing to policy discussions with internal and external clients. The consultant will also be expected to engage in the preparation of written inputs for reports and analytical pieces, ensuring that the findings are accessible and actionable for stakeholders. Additionally, the consultant will support the overall micro-monitoring efforts related to poverty and equity in Ethiopia, working closely with government agencies, academic institutions, and civil society organizations.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field such as econometrics, statistics, or public policy, along with at least 2 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficiency in working with economic and survey data, as well as analytical tools and models, is essential. Experience with national statistical agencies and providing technical support for statistical capacity building is highly desirable. Familiarity with development economics in Ethiopia, national surveys, and local languages will be considered advantageous. Strong quantitative skills and the ability to produce user-friendly written outputs are critical for this role.
Educational Background: The educational requirements for this position include a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as econometrics, statistics, public policy, or a related field. The degree should be complemented by practical experience in data analysis and economic research, particularly in the context of poverty and equity.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in data analysis, economic research, or a related field. Experience working with economic and survey data, as well as familiarity with analytical tools and models, is crucial. Candidates with experience in conducting analytical work on development economics in Ethiopia and those who have engaged with national statistical agencies will be preferred. Additionally, experience in collaborating with government agencies and civil society organizations for policy design discussions is beneficial.
Languages: Professional fluency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in Amharic is also required. Knowledge of other Ethiopian regional languages is considered a plus, as it may enhance communication with local stakeholders and facilitate engagement in the community.
