Job Overview:
The Data Engineer role is crucial for supporting effective data management within the UN's peace operations. This position involves building, managing, and optimizing data pipelines and architectures that facilitate the production of analytics. The Data Engineer will work closely with data analysts and data scientists to ensure that data governance, protection, privacy, and security requirements are met. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to design solutions for technical challenges related to data infrastructure. The Data Engineer will also be responsible for managing individual projects that involve the extraction, transformation, and loading of data from various sources into data pipelines, as well as maintaining data catalogues related to the Action for Peacekeeping Plus (A4P+) initiative. This position is integral to enhancing the organization's analytical capabilities and ensuring that data systems are compliant with established governance frameworks.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Data Engineer will have a range of responsibilities including: managing projects for optimal data extraction, transformation, and loading; designing and developing solutions for data-related technical issues; implementing internal process improvements to automate manual tasks and optimize data delivery; redesigning the A4P+ monitoring architecture for scalability; deploying resources to extract data features for data scientists and analysts; and ensuring compliance with data governance and security requirements. The role also involves collaborating with various teams to identify and address data infrastructure needs, as well as maintaining data catalogues and documentation for data systems.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in data management, integration, modeling, and optimization. Additionally, at least two years of experience specifically related to data work in the A4P+ context is required. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, and C# is essential, along with experience in cloud services and Azure Resource Deployment. Familiarity with Microsoft Power App Deployment, database programming languages (SQL, Spark SQL), and DevOps tools is also necessary. Candidates should demonstrate a strong ability to support cross-functional teams and collaborate with stakeholders on analytics initiatives.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, data management, information systems, information science, or a related quantitative field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant experience, with at least two years specifically in data-related work for the A4P+ initiative. Candidates should have a proven track record of optimizing indicators for reporting and analysis, as well as experience in designing data integration and pipeline architectures. Familiarity with various data ingestion methods and experience with deployment of data pipelines using DevOps tools is also required.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's profile for this position.
