Job Overview: The position of Individual Contractor for the Shipping Unit is crucial for the effective management of shipping services within the UNECA. The contractor will be responsible for ensuring the accurate processing of inbound and outbound shipments of official goods and personal effects for international staff members. This role requires a client-oriented approach to provide high-quality shipping services while maintaining compliance with host country agreements and United Nations staff rules. The contractor will work under the supervision of the Shipping Unit Supervisor and will be expected to contribute to the overall efficiency and professionalism of the shipping services provided by UNECA.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Individual Contractor include processing all inbound and outbound shipments of official goods and personal effects for staff members, managing duty-free privileges in accordance with agreements between Ethiopia and the United Nations, and providing assistance to international staff regarding their shipping needs. The contractor will also be responsible for soliciting quotations from clearing agents, managing petty cash, organizing documentation for shipments, drafting correspondence, resolving issues related to delivered goods, and attending meetings with regulatory bodies. Additionally, the contractor will handle the submission of import permits and ensure compliance with government regulations regarding the importation of cargo. The role requires meticulous organization and attention to detail to maintain accurate records of all shipments and related correspondence.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a High School Diploma and have at least five years of progressively responsible experience in customs clearing processes. This experience should demonstrate a strong understanding of shipping logistics and customs regulations. The contractor should also have excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently while maintaining a high level of accuracy in their work.
Educational Background: A High School Diploma is the minimum educational requirement for this position. Additional certifications or training in logistics, supply chain management, or customs regulations would be advantageous but are not mandatory.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in customs clearing processes. This experience should include handling both inbound and outbound shipments, as well as familiarity with the regulations governing the import and export of goods. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of managing shipping logistics effectively and efficiently.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Excellent writing skills in English are essential. Knowledge of French or another official United Nations language is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate communication with a broader range of stakeholders within the organization.
