The International Organization for Migration (IOM) was established in 1951 and is a Related Organization of the United Nations. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, providing services and advice to governments, the private sector, and migrants. The organization operates in multiple countries across the globe, focusing on various aspects of migration governance, including migration and development, facilitating migration, regulating migration, addressing forced migration, and the implications of climate change on migration.

Job Overview:
The Intern in the Migrant Protection Division (MPX) will support the Regional Thematic Specialist for Migrant Protection in day-to-day operations. The intern will engage in gathering and analyzing information on migrant protection issues, which includes prevention, direct assistance, voluntary return and reintegration, and alternatives to detention. The role involves assisting in the development of policy papers and presentations, as well as contributing to the Division’s strategic plan. The intern will also collect and analyze migration data, strengthen the region’s capacity for data reporting, and support the development of reference materials for ongoing unit priorities. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain extensive knowledge about migrant protection and assistance projects, as well as to participate in various training and professional development sessions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks including: gathering information on migrant protection issues; analyzing data related to IOM activities; strengthening the capacity to report on beneficiaries; managing a reference library; liaising with IOM Member States and other relevant actors; coordinating contributions to institutional reports; preparing presentations and training materials; assisting in workshops and conferences; maintaining communication channels with country offices; supporting field missions in project development; and performing other duties as assigned. This role is integral to the functioning of the Migrant Protection Division and will provide valuable experience in the field of migration governance.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be either students nearing the end of their studies or recent graduates, preferably with an undergraduate degree in migration or related social sciences. Prior knowledge or experience in migration issues is advantageous. Interns should be adaptable to an international, multicultural environment, possess good communication skills, and be able to work effectively in a team. Familiarity with computer programs, including MS Office, is required, along with advanced English writing and communication skills.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should have completed an undergraduate degree in migration studies or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of migration issues and the work of IOM.

Experience:
Candidates should have less than two years of relevant working experience. This internship is designed for individuals who are either students or recent graduates, allowing them to gain practical experience in the field of migration.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, while proficiency in another UN or regional language is considered an asset. This linguistic capability will enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse environment of IOM.

Additional Notes:
The internship is home-based and will last for a duration of 5 months. Interns will receive a stipend as per IOM policy to help cover accommodation and living expenses. However, those receiving financial support from their university or other sponsoring bodies will not be eligible for the stipend. Interns are responsible for obtaining their own medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses and must provide proof of coverage before starting. IOM will assist with visa processing but does not cover evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational reasons. Interns must adhere to confidentiality rules and are expected to produce work solely for academic purposes, retaining copyright with IOM.
