Job Overview:
The Intern for the Timbuktoo Initiative will play a crucial role in supporting the Inclusive Economic Transformation Unit at UNDP. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to learn about the startup ecosystem in Ethiopia and Africa, particularly in the manufacturing sector. The intern will assist in the onboarding of startups to the bootcamp program, engage in communications with stakeholders, and support operational activities of the project. The role offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into project management, administrative processes, and the workings of the UN system while contributing to the establishment of a collaborative ecosystem that fosters innovation and economic growth in Africa.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Team Leader for Inclusive Economic Transformation Unit. Key responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the onboarding process of startups to the bootcamp and ensuring follow-up activities are conducted smoothly.
  • Managing communications and correspondence with relevant stakeholders, ensuring timely responses and follow-ups.
  • Assisting in operational activities such as procurement follow-ups and vendor work delivery.
  • Gathering and managing information related to the hub and other Timbuktoo initiatives to support programmatic design.
  • Organizing high-level events, including the Hub Launch, which involves venue bookings, coordination with event managers, and material preparation.
  • Supporting the organization of meetings with national stakeholders and implementing partners, preparing meeting minutes, and undertaking follow-up actions as necessary.
  • Executing additional duties and assignments as directed by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program (such as a master’s program) or have recently graduated with a first-level university degree in fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering, or Manufacturing Technology. Graduates must have completed their degree within the past year. While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Understanding of private sector and inclusive market development is beneficial, along with a basic understanding of Manufacturing Technology. Experience in event planning and management, particularly in student and community organizations, is desirable. Proficiency in advanced computer software for design and data analysis is an advantage.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes enrollment in a postgraduate degree program or recent graduation with a first-level university degree in relevant engineering fields. This ensures that candidates possess the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills applicable to the internship role.

Experience:
The level of experience needed for this position is minimal, as applicants are not required to have professional work experience. However, candidates should have a strong academic background in a relevant field and may benefit from any practical experience related to event planning, community engagement, or project management. The ability to commit to a six-month internship is essential.

Languages:
Proficiency in English and Amharic, both written and oral, is mandatory for this position. This language requirement is crucial for effective communication with stakeholders and team members. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not explicitly required.
