Job Description
Job Posting Organization: The position is located within the Commercial Insurance Section (CIS) of the Division of Administration (DOA) in the Department of Operational Support (DOS) of the United Nations. The CIS is responsible for assisting various client offices, including the United Nations and its associated Funds and Programmes, in managing risks and hazards through the implementation of a comprehensive suite of eighteen Commercial Insurance Policies. These policies cover a wide range of areas including Air Travel, Cargo, Cash in Transit, and more. The organization aims to provide effective risk mitigation solutions and ensure that the UN's operations are safeguarded against potential risks.
Job Overview: The Insurance Officer will play a critical role in supporting the Chief of the Commercial Insurance Section and the team in the administration of commercial insurance programs that cover UN offices, peacekeeping missions, and various agencies both at Headquarters and internationally. The incumbent will be responsible for auditing premium billings, monitoring expenses, and liaising with brokers and insurers to analyze risk exposures. The role requires making recommendations for appropriate coverage and financing alternatives, assisting in the negotiation and development of insurance policies, and ensuring that all correspondence and queries from UN offices are handled effectively. The Insurance Officer will also be responsible for reviewing contracts to ensure adequate insurance provisions are in place and will facilitate the procurement process for brokerage services. Additionally, the role includes reviewing and processing insurance claims, guiding and training staff, and undertaking special assignments related to risk management initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Insurance Officer include:
Supporting the Chief of the Commercial Insurance Section with the administration of commercial insurance programs.
Auditing premium billings and allocating costs while monitoring expenses.
Liaising with brokers, insurers, and clients to analyze risk exposures.
Making recommendations for coverage and financing alternatives.
Assisting in the development and negotiation of insurance policies.
Identifying improvements in coverage and costs with UN brokers.
Drafting presentations on insurance procurement.
Handling correspondence and queries from UN offices regarding risk management and insurance matters.
Reviewing contracts to ensure appropriate insurance provisions are included. 1

Required Qualifications: The position requires a comprehensive understanding of insurance fundamentals and risk financing mechanisms, as well as knowledge of insurance and procurement contracts. Candidates should possess strong analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis. The ability to apply UN administrative rules and regulations in work situations is essential. Candidates must demonstrate professionalism, efficiency, and a commitment to achieving results while maintaining a focus on gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold an advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in finance, business administration, or a related area. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in business administration, accounting, or finance, with specific responsibilities related to risk management. Experience in selecting and managing commercial insurance contracts is required, as well as experience providing risk management solutions for large organizations. Supervisory experience is also necessary, and familiarity with the United Nations common system or comparable international organizations is desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as French, is considered desirable and may enhance a candidate's application.
